Hypnosis and Surgery Anxiety

Many individuals have high anxiety for surgery or various healthcare procedures as well as dental work.  Individuals may have higher anxiety levels prior to the procedure and may need calming.  Hypnotherapy is an excellent way to help someone find calmness before procedures.  Some medical professionals also learn these techniques to help various patients better prepare for a procedure.   This is becoming more and more common in dental offices and other physician offices that offer minor surgeries.  For those going to larger hospitals for more major procedures, certified clinical hypnotherapists can help individuals find more calm before the procedure.

The article, “Clinical hypnotherapy can relieve pre-surgery anxiety, says consultant” by FMT  reporters looks closer at how dentists, medical professionals and others can help prepare patients for a procedure through clinical hypnotherapy.   The article looks deeper at how hypnosis plays a large role in calming emotions and limiting possible trauma from emerging.   In particular the article looks at how hypnosis can also play a larger role in pain management itself during a minor procedure.  The article states,

“Going into surgery can cause a lot of anxiety for many, but experts say that clinical hypnotherapy can help patients get rid of this fear. Dr Anand Chandrasegaran uses clinical hypnotherapy to treat patients with acute procedural anxiety, a condition which can make patients extremely anxious before surgery. But just one session of hypnotherapy before surgery can reverse this, making patients more relaxed and less fearful.”

Commentary

Clinical hypnotherapy is a branch of hypnotherapy that is specifically geared towards helping patients in a clinical setting. This type of hypnotherapy is often used in conjunction with other forms of therapy, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, to help patients overcome various mental and emotional disorders.  There are many reasons to choose hypnosis as a therapeutic modality. First, hypnosis is a very effective way to achieve a relaxed state both physically and mentally. This relaxed state is conducive to healing and allows the individual to access deep levels of consciousness where change can occur. Second, hypnosis is a natural state that we all experience every day. We go into a trance-like state several times a day when we daydream or become absorbed in an activity.

Clinical hypnotherapy has been shown to be effective in treating a wide variety of conditions, including anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and phobias.  As stated, it is also a possible tool to help with pain management and also reducing anxiety prior to medical procedures.

Clinical Hypnotherapy and pain management

There is a growing body of evidence that suggests hypnosis can be an effective tool for managing pain. For example, one study found that cancer patients who underwent hypnosis experienced less pain and anxiety than those who did not .  Hypnosis works by altering our state of consciousness and relaxing the mind-body connection . This allows us to focus our attention away from the pain and on something else entirely.

The effects of hypnosis on pain have been extensively studied. In general, hypnosis has been found to be effective in reducing both the intensity and perception of pain. Additionally, hypnosis has been found to be effective in reducing both the physiological and psychological response to pain. The mechanisms by which hypnosis exerts its effects on pain are not fully understood, but it is thought that hypnotic suggestion modulates cognitive and emotional processing of pain information.

Clinical Hypnotherapy and anxiety before surgery

In addition helping with pain management, hypnosis can also reduce anxiety before surgery.  Hypnosis is a state of heightened suggestibility in which individuals are more open to suggestions for change. This state can be induced by a trained professional through the use of relaxation and focused attention techniques. Research has shown that hypnosis may be an effective treatment for anxiety disorders, as it can help to reduce fear and worry, and increase relaxation and confidence.  These are extremely important aspects for an individual’s state of mind prior to surgery.

When anxiety occurs before surgery, it can increase the risk of complications and negatively affect the surgical outcome. There are several strategies that can be used to reduce anxiety before surgery, including relaxation techniques, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and medication.  There is a long-standing debate in the medical community about the efficacy of hypnosis as a surgical intervention. Some proponents argue that hypnosis can be used to control pain and anxiety during surgery, while detractors claim that there is no evidence to support these claims. Despite the lack of consensus, some studies have shown that hypnosis can be an effective tool for managing pain and anxiety during surgery.

Conclusion

In conclusion, hypnosis has been found to be an effective way to manage pain before surgery. It is safe, non-invasive, and can be used in conjunction with other pain management methods. If you are considering surgery, talk to your doctor about using hypnosis to help control your pain.  In addition, hypnosis has been shown to be an effective tool in reducing anxiety before surgery. It is important to remember that everyone responds differently to hypnosis, so it is important to find a qualified professional who can help you determine if it is the right tool for you.

The article, “5 Reasons Why EFT Can Be a Powerful Therapy Option for Men” by Marie Miguel looks at a variety of ways EFT can help men emotionally.  Miguel reveals that EFT can help with many men in expressing their emotions more and confronting stored feelings.  She also relates that EFT can overall help many men with their relationships/  She states,

“If you tend to avoid your feelings, EFT can be a hugely helpful tool in opening up and enhancing your emotional connection with people in your life. Oftentimes, our inability to face unpleasant emotions just kicks the can down the road. It makes us feel less mentally healthy in the long-run and results in us being unable to meet our own needs or the needs of others.”

In review, The Emotional Freedom Technique, or EFT, is a psychotherapeutic approach which utilizes modalities of cognitive-behavioral therapy and exposure therapy. The technique involves the utilization of acupressure points along the body’s energy meridians in order to restore balance within the endocrine system and reestablish emotional equilibrium. By releasing blockages in the energy system, it is thought that emotional distress can be ameliorated through this technique.

Society pushes many visions of men having to hide emotion. EFT can help men cope and experience emotion to prevent improper coping later in life.

EFT can be very beneficial for men.  Many men are more closed with emotion.  The stoic ideal of a man not crying or hiding his emotions is closely correlated with modern social views of what it is to be masculine.  Emotional release, tears or coming into contact with feelings is seen as a sign of weakness.  This is farther from the truth

The phenomenon of men concealing emotion can be explained through an analysis of the socialization process, particularly in terms of gender roles. Patriarchal societies often promote male stoicism and self-control, which serves to reinforce a socially constructed binary between femininity and masculinity. As such, men are conditioned to exhibit traditional masculine traits, such as emotional detachment and a tendency to suppress one’s own emotions in favor of exhibiting strength and independence.  Studies have shown that traditional gender roles often confine men to roles of stoicism, toughness, and emotional detachment which can lead to a disconnect between their personal feelings and outward expressions. The fear of being judged for displaying emotion or appearing weak may lead men to suppress those feelings in order to maintain their sense of masculinity.
Ultimately, men need to become more in tune with their emotions and express them for a more mentally healthful life.   In order to process trauma, or loss, it is important for any human being to express and understand one’s feelings.  This is no different for males.
EFT and Expression of Emotion
Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) has been demonstrated to be a useful modality for aiding men in the expression of their emotions. Through its implementation, EFT can assist men in developing healthier emotional regulation strategies and gain an understanding of the interplay between their physical and psychological states. This technique involves tapping on acupressure points while verbalizing or thinking about a particular problem or issue, which has been seen to stimulate the body’s natural healing energies.

Conclusion
In conclusion, Emotional Freedom Technique can be an invaluable tool for men to access and manage their emotions. The technique has been used successfully for many years, helping people of all genders to identify and cope with difficult emotions. While it’s important for anyone, particularly men, to recognize their feelings and work through them in safe ways, Emotional Freedom Technique offers a powerful alternative that is effective, efficient and non-invasive.  For some men, this is also a benefit since EFT can be practiced in the privacy of one’s own home.

Christian Counseling Certification Blog on The Resurrection and Faith

The foundation rock of the Christian faith is the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.  Without the Resurrection, the Christian faith is no more than a philosophy of how to live life.  The Resurrection definitively places Christ as God and makes His ministry more than mere philosophy but a redemptive act.  Christ’s crucifixion and sacrifice means nothing without the Resurrection.  As the apostle wrote, as one dies with Christ, one will also rise with Christ. Christ’s Resurrection validates the sacrifice of the cross and glorifies Him as both man and God.  It is hence a critical belief central to Christianity and without it there can be no Christianity.  Please also review AIHCP’s Christian Counseling Certification

Faith and the accounts of the witnesses form the foundation for this central dogma.  Unlike St Thomas who was given empirical verification, believers must rely merely on the words of witnesses found in Scripture.  Faith is belief in something that cannot be verified.  As Christians, we will never physically see evidence of Christ’s Resurrection, but Christians can place hope in their placed faith that the accounts are true.

While faith teaches us that Jesus did rise from the dead historically, it is still an event that does not have empirical proof and is a historical fact based on faith alone. Please also review AIHCP’s Christian Counseling Certification

Those who witnessed and wrote the stories related to the Resurrection, found in Gospels, all relate to both a Resurrection of Christ.  Those who bore witness also suffered horrible martyrdom for their witness.  This gives credibility to their accounts.  Individuals do not tend to give their lives for a falsehood or a lie.   The first generation of Christians who witnessed Christ live among them for forty days gave the ultimate sacrifice of their lives in account for this truth.

Still, later generations lived by word of mouth and faith.   Christ told St Thomas, “Blessed are those who have not seen yet still believe” in regards to His Resurrection.  Hence faith and this divine promise is all modern Christians have.  A faith in an account handed down two thousand years ago.   This is the crux of faith.  Faith believes in what it cannot witness.  Faith accepts mystery.  Faith accepts miracles that contradict the law of nature.

For many years, unbelievers assaulted the Gospel account.  They questioned if the apostles were delusional, or if the Romans had actually really crucified Jesus properly, but as time proceeded, enemies of the faith began to question the account itself as something not historical.  The account was seen as something mythical or something to help one understand the nature of spiritual life and rebirth in God’s grace.  This watering down of the message was popular in Modernist circles that looked to demytholize Scripture and attempt to interpret it as not a historical account.   The Resurrection, according to the Modernist, could no longer be seen as historical but mythical with a deeper meaning for humanity.

Within this endeavor, the Modernists looked to weaken the historical accuracy of the account and within the Gospel of Mark claim that the Resurrection narrative was added to the account later after the original had been written.  This suggested that the idea of Resurrection was something the Christians added to the story years after Christ’s death.  This pure speculation fueled the Modernist attack on Scripture itself.

Whether one chooses to believe or not Jesus resurrected is one’s own decision but the attempt to divorce the Resurrection from Christianity, or to claim that the Resurrection was a mythical concept to the early Christians, or that they purposely lied about the account is a very large assumption.  In essence, if one chooses to be Christian, one carries the dogmas that come with it.  One cannot choose to cherry pick the numerous dogmas of the faith as if it is a buffet to pick and deny.   The Resurrection is an article of faith.  It cannot be proven empirically.  It is mystery and goes well beyond the laws of nature.  It is something who believes in Jesus Christ must accept if one wishes to bear the name Christian.

The noise of those who doubt can challenge one’s intellect.  It can even at times cause doubt.  It is natural to question.  This is the true crux of faith in a fallen world.  It is accepting the unexplainable and still choosing to accept it.   One can theologically come to the conclusion of the necessity of the Resurrection, but faith itself pushes one beyond reason.  Faith pushes one to accept it as historical fact.

Many individuals have faith though in supernatural things.  Other faiths hold true to ideas that are also beyond reason but Christians deny.  The point is there will always be debates between religions, or debates between secularists and religious, but one holds to faith regardless.  This is a human phenomenon and not something to be denounced as illogical or foolish.  Logic and philosophy can only go so far.  To understand the deeper mysteries, empirical tools become mute.  It is then up to the soul to firmly attach to an idea, such as the Resurrection, as something that occurred and was important to human history.

As Christians we choose to believe Jesus rose. Please also review AIHCP’s Christian Counseling Certification

I do not mean to put all beliefs, simply because of faith, to be on par with Jesus’s Resurrection.  As a Christian, the Resurrection is not myth or fairy tale but a true historical act.  The only point is faith is something that pushes the intellect to the side and allows the soul to immerse itself in something beyond the material world and accept it with spiritual eyes.  In faith, we choose to dismiss the arguments of others and hold true.  This is the virtue of hope.  A hope that what we believe will one day be seen.

The words of Christ again echo importantly, “Blessed are those who still believe, yet not seen”

Anger Management and Road Rage

Road rage can become a deadly encounter for many.  For many anger comes quick and when that anger affects the response behind a 2 ton vehicle with a simple brake or turn of the wheel, then drastic things can occur.  Many are killed in accidents due to road rage.  While driving or on the side of the road, fights and violent attacks can take place..  It is important to control anger behind the wheel and be considerate of other drivers.   Anger has no place when driving.  Anger Management can play a key role in helping individuals manage rage while driving.

Anger on the road can lead to fatal endings. Please also review AIHCP’s Anger Management Consulting Certification

It can take very little to offset someone into road rage.  How one turns, lack of turn signal, or illicit use of the horn can reciprocate an angry response.  It is important to be mindful of these things when driving and practice proper anger management skills.

The article, “Controlling Your Anger on the Roads” by Sarah Landrum looks closer at the dangers of road rage and how to avoid it.  She discusses various ways one can better channel their anger while driving.  She also lists how defensive driving can help put individuals in better situations so potential road rage does not emerge.  Aggressive driving is a primary culprit in road rage.   She states,

“Aggressive driving confrontations may unfortunately escalate to incidents of aggressive — or even deadly — attacks, and anyone can be the victim. Children, parents, school teachers, even celebrities — accounts of road rage fill the headlines daily and the victims span the spectrum. Of course, you can’t always control the acts of others. However, it’s important to monitor your own behavior. If you find yourself becoming frustrated by other drivers, it’s time to take a deep breath. Redirect your anger. Consider these tips for controlling your anger on the road.”

Controlling Your Anger on the Roads. Sarah Landrum.  October 25th, 2016. PsychCentral

Commentary

Road rage can be defined as aggressive or violent behavior stemming from a driver’s frustration. This frustration can be caused by many things, such as heavy traffic, bad drivers, or stressful life events. When this frustration boils over, it can lead to angry outbursts and dangerous driving behaviors. Road rage is a serious problem because it puts everyone on the road at risk.  There are four primary types of road rage: verbal aggression, physical aggression, vehicle aggression, and indicators of aggression. Verbal aggression includes yelling, swearing, or making obscene gestures. Physical aggression involves any type of physical contact, such as pushing, shoving, hitting, or kicking. Vehicle aggression encompasses any dangerous driving behaviors, such as tailgating, cutting off other drivers, or braking suddenly.

Road rage is a very real phenomenon in the United States. According to a study by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, 66% of fatal car crashes involve some form of aggressive driving. This figure has been on the rise in recent years, and shows no signs of abating.  it is generally accepted that road rage is more common in urban areas than rural areas. This is likely due to the increased traffic congestion and stress that is associated with living in a city. Additionally, road rage is more likely to occur during rush hour traffic or when drivers are running late.

Reasons for Road Rage

There are a number of reasons that can contribute to road rage. One reason is the anonymity of being in a car. When people are driving, they can be more aggressive because they feel anonymous and removed from the consequences of their actions. Another reason is stress. People who are already stressed out are more likely to lash out when something else happens that adds to their stress, such as another driver cutting them off in traffic.  When people are already running late or feeling stressed, even a small delay can be enough to trigger an angry response.
Another reason for road rage is a sense of competition or territoriality on the road. Some people see driving as a test of skill and feel like they have to prove themselves every time they get behind the wheel.

Others feel the need to police the road and will attempt to correct or punish a driver who goes to fast, tries to pass or misuses a signal.  Lack of proper road etiquette can set others off against each other.  It is hence important to remember to follow the rules of the road, avoid competing, stop policing and mind one’s own business with good and safe defensive driving.  No one knows what another drive is capable of or willing to do to another driver.

Anger Management and Road Rage

Anger management refers to the process of recognizing and regulating one’s emotions, in order to prevent them from boiling over into negative behaviours, such as road rage.  Anger management prevents road rage by teaching people how to control their emotions. When people are angry, they may lash out and cause accidents. By learning how to control their anger, they can prevent road rage from happening.

Conclusion

Whatever may be bothering oneself, it is not worth road rage or the violence that can pursue it.  It is important to avoid being a victim of road rage via good defensive driving but it is also equally important not to become the source of it through aggressive driving or verbal insults.  Anger Management is key in preventing road rage and if someone has an anger issue, that person should then seek proper professional help to control one’ temper, especially while driving.

What I can control are my thoughts, and instead of feeling guilty over it, I tell my mind that it’s okay to feel frightened and isolated over these thoughts. But I will also try to tell it to live in the present as much as it can – to laugh, eat, argue, and care for my father, as much as he cared for me when I was young.”

“Meanwhile, county jails and other correctional facilities are ill-equipped to handle the treatment needs of people with behavioral health issues, and incarceration can exacerbate certain mental health disorders. Yet jails are often filled with people whose mental health needs could be better supported elsewhere. A study of Los Angeles County jails, for instance, determined that more than 60% of their population with mental illnesses likely could have been better served by community programs, as opposed to incarceration.”
