Christianity focuses on the death of Christ as a focal point to redemption. Christ is sacrificed for the sins of the world. The ugliness of sin is witnessed in this death. The Stations of the Cross capture the ugliness of sin in the horrendous suffering of Christ. The Stations are widely seen as a Catholic tradition but in reality are a cherished meditation for all of Christianity if all Christians take the time to walk with Christ and this journey.
It originated in the early centuries in the Holy Land and was brought West by St Francis of Assisi. Some of the stations have direct biblical reference while others are implied from Scripture. During Lent, consider walking the journey to Calvary with Christ through this powerful prayer and meditation. Since Covid erupted onto the healthcare scene, Telehealth has become a more available option for appointments. At the peak of the outbreak it was a necessity and continues to hold importance to individuals who have a difficult time getting out to see a doctor. Many also love the convenience. Since it was successful, this newer technology can be applied to a wide variety of healthcare and mental healthcare needs. Substance abuse counseling is a sector that can use its service. It can keep individuals who are susceptible to addiction find support and guidance.
Telehealth can help counselors help those with substance abuse.
The article, “Can Telehealth Help With Addiction Treatment?” by John Loeppky takes a look how this novel and important technology can utilized for those suffering from substance abuse. He concludes that the values are immense but only if this service can be applied to the population who needs it, whether in rural areas or access. He calls for a greater push for this service to help individuals facing substance abuse and addiction. He states,
“Experts say that the changes around telehealth medical appointments could help many with substance misuse disorder, but that many people may not get access to these programs. Dr. Katherine Hirchak (PhD, MHPA) of Washington State University, whose research and work is centered on American Indigenous communities, says that healthcare policymakers and providers need to make sure that they’re not prescribing urban solutions to issues facing rural communities, especially when it comes to internet availability.”
“Can Telehealth Help With Addiction Treatment? John Loeppky. January 29th, 2023. Healthline.
The technology revolution has changed the way we live our lives, the way we work, and the way we access healthcare. It has made it easier for us to access health care services from the comfort of our own homes, and it has made it possible for us to access specialized care that may not have been available in our locality. One of the most significant changes it has brought about is in the way we access substance abuse treatment. In this blog, we will discuss telehealth and how it is revolutionizing substance abuse treatment.
What is Telehealth?
Telehealth is a form of remote healthcare delivery that uses technology to provide medical care, mental health services, and other health-related services. It is a great way to provide healthcare services to people in remote locations or those who are not able to access traditional healthcare services. It is also an effective way to provide care to those who have mobility issues or other special needs.
Telehealth services can include video conferencing, phone calls, emails, and text messages. It is a way for healthcare providers to stay connected with their patients and to provide timely and efficient care.
Telehealth and Substance Abuse Treatment
Telehealth can provide an amazing service for substance abuse practitioners to help their clients with addiction and mental health
Telehealth has become an increasingly popular option for substance abuse treatment. It has allowed treatment providers to reach a broader range of patients who may not have been able to access traditional services. It has allowed providers to offer more personalized care and to tailor treatment plans to the individual needs of each patient.
Telehealth is also a great way for substance abuse treatment providers to monitor the progress of their patients. They can use video conferencing to observe patients’ behavior and to provide feedback and guidance. They can also use text messaging and email to stay connected with their patients and to provide reminders and encouragement.
Benefits of Telehealth for Substance Abuse Treatment
One of the greatest benefits of telehealth for substance abuse treatment is its convenience. It eliminates the need for patients to travel to a treatment center and can be accessed from anywhere with an internet connection. This makes it easier for patients to access treatment and to stay connected with their providers.
Telehealth also allows for more personalized care. Providers can use video conferencing to observe their patients and to tailor treatment plans to their individual needs. They can also use video conferencing to provide feedback and guidance to their patients.
Telehealth also makes it easier for substance abuse treatment providers to collaborate with other healthcare providers. Providers can use video conferencing to consult with other providers and to discuss treatment plans. This allows them to provide the best possible care to their patients.
Finally, telehealth allows for more cost-effective care. It eliminates the need for patients to travel to a treatment center and can be accessed from a variety of devices, including smartphones and tablets. This can help reduce the cost of care and make it more accessible to those who may not be able to afford traditional treatment services.
Challenges of Telehealth for Substance Abuse Treatment
While telehealth has many advantages in the treatment of substance abuse, there are also some challenges that need to be addressed. For example, telehealth services may not be available in all areas, and there may be limitations on what services can be provided. Additionally, telehealth services may be difficult to access for those in rural areas who do not have access to reliable internet or mobile phone services.
Another challenge is that telehealth services may not be as effective as traditional face-to-face treatment services. This is because it may be difficult for the provider to observe changes in behavior and to provide feedback and guidance. Additionally, there may be limitations on how much information can be shared and discussed over video conferencing.
Finally, there may be a lack of privacy and security with telehealth services. This is because the services may be provided over public networks, which can be vulnerable to security breaches. Additionally, there may be a lack of regulation in some areas, which can lead to a lack of oversight and accountability.
Telehealth and Mental Health Services
Telehealth is also being used for mental health services, such as counseling and therapy. It is a great way for providers to stay connected with their patients and to provide timely and efficient care. Additionally, it can be used to provide services to those in remote locations or those who are not able to access traditional services.
However, there are some challenges with telehealth for mental health services. For example, it may be difficult to establish trust and rapport with a patient over video conferencing. Additionally, there may be technical issues and delays, which can make it difficult for the provider to provide effective care.
Telehealth and Evidence-Based Practices
Evidence-based practices are an important part of substance abuse treatment. They are strategies and interventions that have been proven to be effective in the treatment of substance abuse. Telehealth can be used to provide evidence-based services, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy and motivational interviewing.
Telehealth can also be used to provide other evidence-based services, such as medication-assisted treatment and relapse prevention. It can be used to provide education and support for patients, as well as to monitor their progress and provide feedback and guidance.
Telehealth and Accessibility
One of the greatest benefits of telehealth is its accessibility. It eliminates the need for patients to travel to a treatment center and can be accessed from anywhere with an internet connection. This makes it easier for patients to access treatment and to stay connected with their providers.
Additionally, telehealth can be used to provide services to those in remote locations or those who are not able to access traditional services. It can also be used to provide services to those who have mobility issues or other special needs.
Finally, telehealth can be used to provide services to those who cannot afford traditional treatment services. It can be a more cost-effective option and can make treatment more accessible to those who may not be able to afford traditional services.
Telehealth and Cost Effectiveness
Telehealth can also be a more cost-effective option for substance abuse treatment. It eliminates the need for patients to travel to a treatment center and can be accessed from a variety of devices, including smartphones and tablets. This can help reduce the cost of care and make it more accessible to those who may not be able to afford traditional treatment services.
Additionally, telehealth can be used to provide more cost-effective services to those who cannot afford traditional services. For example, telehealth can be used to provide counseling services to those who cannot afford weekly visits to a therapist. It can also be used to provide medication-assisted treatment to those who cannot afford inpatient or residential treatment programs.
Conclusion

When others experience individuals in pain and suffering, they many time do not know what to say. Some remain silent and distant due to the discomfort it may bring them, or inability to express, while others may seek to comfort. Unfortunately, many good intentioned individuals who look to offer help do more damage in the words they say. Many do not understand the process of grief or experienced loss and the words they say can make the grief process worst. Unlike Grief Counselors who are trained in grief and loss counseling, these individuals usually say the wrong thing at the wrong time. Understanding grief can help individuals in how to approach the bereaved and how to speak or not speak to a individual experiencing trauma. It is an important life skill that can make all the difference for a suffering friend or colleague.
Helping the bereaved with the right actions and words is key for trained grief counselors
The article, “I Lost My Dad. These Are The 7 Words I Wish I’d Never Been Told At His Funeral.” by Carly Midgley relates her own experience with the death of her father. She too experienced the many well wishes of others at the funeral but many of the words at times did not help but made it more difficult for her. The article discusses on why certain things that seem innocent are not the best phrases or condolences for those experiencing a loss and instead encourages better ways to help the bereaved. Midgley states,
“But the people who surrounded me seemed as helpless as I was, uncertain how to proceed regardless of whether they’d known him. Sometimes, their attempts at comfort made a difference: A walk around the funeral home with a friend who let me talk as long as I wanted, or a family friend sharing what they remembered of my father’s youth, helped pull me to the surface of my grief just long enough to breathe. Other times, however, the people I spoke to were so filled with awkwardness about death, or with eagerness to fix it for me, that the exchanges turned prescriptive:”
“I Lost My Dad. These Are The 7 Words I Wish I’d Never Been Told At His Funeral”. Carly Midgley. January 19th, 2023. Yahoo News.
Obviously well intentioned individuals will reach out at a funeral to help the suffering family with words of advice or condolences. Many times, these words are not the right thing to say. Some of this stems from the types of individuals and their own experience with grief. Some may seem aloof or distant due to the discomfort of death and discussing it or even seeing other people be emotional. Others may be still working on their own grief and attempt to offer advice that has helped themselves. Others may be trying to say the perfect thing in an attempt to fix and heal the bereaved.
When helping the bereaved, it is important to have a strong understanding of the connection and gravity of the loss. It is important to only offer more words if requested regarding one’s own experiences and to keep it simple. One cannot fix the loss but one can offer condolence and sometimes not even a word but if appropriate a hug or a listening ear.
Phrases to Avoid at a Funeral
The biggest issues occur when one attempts to know it all or look to fix the loss on the spot. Phrases that compare the loss or speak of knowing how it feels need to be avoided. The time is not about one’s experience but the person grieving. Furthermore, grief is unique, the person may be experiencing the same type of loss very differently so one does not truly know how one feels. It is best to only offer comparative stories of loss if requested.
Many well intentioned people say the wrong words at a funeral regarding loss. Please also review AIHCP’S Grief Counseling Training
Other phrases start with the words “at least”. While well intentioned, they attempt to lessen the loss but the loss itself is something the person is experiencing. While it may be receptive to some ears, it may upset others who only know the objective reality that their loved one is gone. So if someone died abruptly, adding the phrase that at least he did not suffer is not conducive to helping the situation. Or at least, his or her suffering is now at end. While this phrase can be utilized carefully depending on the situation, it can become more painful to parents who lost a child.
Phrases that also put the deceased in a better place should be avoided. The bereaved only want their loved one them not somewhere else. So while opening a phrase with “at least she is in a better place” does not equate to lessening the pain for many. It does not remove the current absence. Furthermore many times, individuals may be angry with God and not ready to discuss the afterlife. Hence it is good to avoid this phrase.
Another phrase to avoid features a judgement upon how one will feel. A phrase that opens with you will be OK or you will get over this in time should be completely avoided. It is a large mistake to attempt to dictate how one will feel or tell someone who is currently grieving that it will be OK. The present moment needs to be respected.
An equally worst thing to say is that it could be worst. For the bereaved it is already horrible. The loss of a loved one cannot be worst or compared to other losses. The loss itself must be respected for what it is and not lessened, challenged, or compared.
In addition, many individuals offer help, but fail to realize many do not have the energy to do something or even ask. Instead of offering, do. Instead of waiting for a call, call. Many are left after the funeral with nothing. The funeral to those more distant is a mere ceremony, but for those missing their loved ones, it is the first step in a long process of grieving. The funeral is the start not the end. So it is important to check on friends and ask them if they are OK or how they feel. Listening and allowing others to vent is a big thing.
Things to Say
In contrast, focus on the loss itself. He or she will be missed or I am sorry for your loss are very comforting, direct, acknowledging and non judgmental. They do not take away from the person or the sorrow of the present.
Conclusion
Many people at funerals offer condolences the wrong way. This is due to their own discomfort with death, lack of understanding grieving or attempts to fix the bereaved. Sojourning and listening and respecting the loss for its own is critical to helping people during grief and loss. When individual’s feelings are acknowledged and respected in the moment, then individuals can grieve in a healthy fashion.

Studies show that management of negative emotions can have long term health benefits. When anxiety and depressive thoughts are permitted to run freely, there are signs that it can lead to later neurodegenerative results such as dementia. Individuals need to process emotions but do so in a healthy way without over obsessing and allowing anxiety and negative experiences to control their lives. Meditation and EFT are effective ways to help individuals better cope with negative emotion.
EFT can help the body remove negative emotion. Please also review AIHCP’s EFT Practitioner Program and see if it meets your goals
A recent study from Geneva looks closer at how negative emotions can affect the health of the brain as one ages. The article, “Managing Emotions Better Could Prevent Pathological Aging” from Neurosciencenews.com reviewed this study. The study exposed younger and older individuals to negative emotional videos and traced the brain’s reactions to it. The way the brain reacts and the way one allows oneself to be affected long term can play a key role in brain health in later age. The article relates that,
“Older people tend to regulate their emotions better than younger people, and focus more easily on positive details, even during a negative event. But changes in connectivity between the posterior cingulate cortex and the amygdala could indicate a deviation from the normal aging phenomenon, accentuated in people who show more anxiety, rumination and negative emotions. The posterior cingulate cortex is one of the regions most affected by dementia, suggesting that the presence of these symptoms could increase the risk of neurodegenerative disease.”

Commentary
While negative emotion is a reality in life and something that cannot be escaped, one can limit the damage negative emotion incurs upon the brain by better coping skills with anxiety, stress and grief. Cognitive reframing, positivity, and better responses to challenges instead of dwelling upon them are key ways individuals can move forward with negative feelings. Those who instead struggle with processing negative events and dwell upon them without process can overtime allow these emotions to do more harm to their brain. While the full understanding of emotions and their effects on the brain are relatively new, it is still points to the importance of while facing negativity in life to also push towards good mental coping and health strategies.
Meditation and Negative Emotion
Meditation and mindfulness are excellent ways to deal with negative emotions. Meditation has been widely studied for its effects on reducing negative emotions. It has been suggested that meditation can help to foster a more positive emotional state as it is thought to promote a higher degree of self-regulation, allowing individuals to better process and manage emotional responses. Studies have indicated that mindfulness-based interventions, such as meditation, can be effective in ameliorating the symptoms of anxiety and depression. The practice of meditation is widely accepted as an effective strategy for the mitigation of maladaptive affect, such as anxiety and depression. This is often achieved through the cultivation of mindful awareness, which involves focusing one’s attention on the present moment while simultaneously becoming aware of one’s bodily sensations, thoughts and feelings.
EFT and Negative Emotion
EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) is an empirically validated psychological intervention that seeks to reduce negative emotion by utilizing a combination of exposure and cognitive reframing strategies. By engaging in the technique, individuals are able to process and reconceptualize their emotional experiences through a structured approach that involves repeated tapping on specific body points while simultaneously focusing on the associated thoughts, feelings, or memories. The technique has been demonstrated to be efficacious in decreasing physiological arousal and negative affect associated with psychological distress.
Many negative anxieties or traumas can become trapped within oneself. This negative energy and emotion as pointed out is unhealthy for the brain and body. EFT through cognitive approaches and tapping look to move negative energy from the body and mind. Closely associated with acupuncture, it understands that the body carries energy through various meridians. Through effectively tapping and stimulating those areas, EFT Practitioners look to help individuals process this energy.
In concert with the physical tapping, the individual mentally and verbally identifies the stressor or negative emotion. Furthermore through continuous cycles, the individual soon begins to replace the negative emotion or stressors with positive reframing. This looks to help the mind and body both heal from the negative effects of trauma, stress and anxiety.
Conclusion
An EFT Practitioner can help one utilize EFT as a tool to remove trauma and anxiety
In conclusion, removing negative emotion from our lives can be a difficult task. It takes effort, self-awareness, and practice to achieve. However, the rewards and results of doing so are innumerable and far reaching. We become better leaders, better problem solvers, better communicators and better versions of ourselves when we take away the power of negative emotion and replace it with positive ones. Ultimately, we gain greater control over our lives so that we can more effectively reach our goals and realize our potential.
Tapping with EFT has been proven to be an effective way to reduce negative emotion and improve mental wellbeing. It is a simple, evidence-based technique that can be used by anyone, anytime, and almost anywhere. Additionally, EFT helps people to gain insight into the underlying cause of their distress and develop more healthy coping mechanisms. Therefore, EFT should be considered as a viable option for reducing negative emotions in both clinical and non-clinical settings.
Please also review AIHCP’s Meditation Instructor Program as well as AIHCP’s EFT Practitioner Program. Both programs are online and independent study and open to qualified professionals seeking a four year certification. EFT Practitioners in particular can help many individuals dealing with trauma and negative emotion to find ways to heal and move forward. Overdose deaths due to drug use are in the rise again. Individuals due to opioids and other drugs especially with Fentanyl are increasing the number drastically. Individuals hence are turning to overdose reversal drugs such as Naloxone to save lives. The life saving reversal is becoming more and more available but its presence and use is only a bandage. It does not remove the source of the issue which is addiction. Substance Abuse and addiction need real solutions that help individuals emotionally overcome drug use and find healthier ways to cope. Addiction and Substance Abuse Counselors can help individuals learn to overcome addiction.
With opioids being such a wild card in what is being taken with them or being filled with another substance, it is no wonder why they are so dangerous
CNN recently wrote an interesting article on the use of Naloxone in the ongoing opioid crisis. The article, “Naloxone is reaching more people than ever” by Deidre McPhillips and Janelle Chavez, discuss the ongoing increase in deaths due to overdose. They furthermore discuss the role Naloxone plays in reducing those deaths and how it will soon be more accessible to others. Despite this, again, this is seen as a bandage to a greater problem. The article states in regards to better access,
“The US Food and Drug Administration will meet next month to review the first application for a naloxone nasal spray that would be available over-the-counter. The application, which is for a generic version of Narcan from drugmaker Emergent BioSolutions, was granted priority review in December after the FDA signaled that it would support submissions to improve access. Still, experts say that improving access to naloxone is just one step down a long road. Making the medication available over-the-counter will help make it more accessible, but experts say it’s important that it gets to the right people.”

In recent years, opioid overdose deaths have become a major public health crisis in the United States. However, there is hope for those living with opioid addiction. Naloxone, a life-saving medication, is proving to be an effective tool in reducing opioid overdose deaths. In this blog, we will discuss what naloxone is, the dangers of opioid overdoses, how naloxone is administered, the legal implications and restrictions on naloxone, availability and access to naloxone, education and awareness of naloxone, the benefits of naloxone, and the cost of naloxone.
While Naloxone is crucial to saving lives, the root problem of substance abuse needs to be addressed as well.
What is Naloxone and How Does it Work?
Naloxone, also known as Narcan, is a drug that is used to reverse the effects of opioid overdoses. It works by blocking the opioid receptors in the brain, thereby reversing the effects of an overdose. Naloxone is an opioid antagonist, meaning it binds to opioid receptors and blocks them, preventing any further action. It is important to note that naloxone does not have any effect on non-opioid drugs such as alcohol, benzodiazepines, or cocaine.
Naloxone is a safe and effective drug with few side effects. It is available in both injectable and nasal spray forms, making it easy to administer. Naloxone can be given by first responders, family members, or friends of someone who is experiencing an opioid overdose. It is important to note that naloxone does not replace medical attention and the person who has received naloxone should seek medical attention as soon as possible.
The Dangers and Statistics of Opioid Overdoses Due to Substance Abuse
Substance abuse and overdose due to opioid abuse is becoming a common issue in today’s society.
Opioid overdoses are a major public health concern in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 130 people in the United States die each day from an opioid substance abuse and overdose. In 2017, more than 47,000 people died from an opioid overdose. The majority of these deaths were due to prescription opioids, such as oxycodone and hydrocodone, and synthetic opioids, such as fentanyl.
Opioid overdose deaths have been on the rise in recent years, due in large part to the increasing availability of illegal opioids, such as heroin and fentanyl. These drugs are often mixed with other substances, making them even more dangerous. The misuse of prescription opioids is also contributing to the increasing number of opioid overdoses.
How Naloxone is Saving Lives
Naloxone has been proven to be an effective tool in reducing opioid overdose deaths. Since its introduction in 1996, naloxone has been used to reverse more than 26,000 opioid overdoses in the United States. In many cases, naloxone has been used to save the lives of those who would have otherwise died due to an opioid overdose.
Naloxone is also increasingly being used to reduce the number of opioid-related fatalities. In some states, laws have been passed that allow first responders to carry and administer naloxone. In addition, many states have passed laws that allow family members and friends of those with opioid addiction to obtain a prescription for naloxone.
How Naloxone is Administered
Naloxone can be administered in a number of ways. Injectable naloxone is the most common form of administration and is typically used by first responders. Injectable naloxone is given through an injection into a muscle, typically in the arm or leg. Naloxone can also be administered through a nasal spray, which is easy to use and does not require any medical training.
In some states, naloxone is available over the counter at pharmacies. This makes it easier for family members and friends of those with opioid addiction to obtain naloxone. It is important to note that, while naloxone can be administered without a prescription, it should only be used with medical supervision.
The Legal Implications and Restrictions on Naloxone
In recent years, many states have passed laws that allow first responders to carry and administer naloxone. These laws provide immunity from criminal and civil liability for those who administer naloxone in good faith. In addition, many states have passed laws that allow family members and friends of those with opioid addiction to obtain a prescription for naloxone.
However, there are still some restrictions on naloxone. In some states, naloxone is only available through a prescription from a doctor. In addition, there are some states that do not allow for naloxone to be prescribed to family members or friends of those with opioid addiction. It is important to check with your state to determine the legal implications and restrictions on naloxone.
Availability and Access to Naloxone
Naloxone is increasingly becoming more available and accessible. In recent years, many states have passed laws that allow first responders to carry and administer naloxone. In addition, many states have passed laws that allow family members and friends of those with opioid addiction to obtain a prescription for naloxone.
In some states, naloxone is available over the counter at pharmacies. This makes it easier for family members and friends of those with opioid addiction to obtain naloxone. In addition, many states have passed laws that allow pharmacists to dispense naloxone without a prescription. It is important to check with your local pharmacy to see if naloxone is available.
Education and Awareness of Naloxone
In order for naloxone to be effective, it is important for people to be educated and aware of its use. This includes understanding the signs and symptoms of an opioid overdose and knowing when and how to administer naloxone. Many states have passed laws that require first responders to be trained in the proper use of naloxone.
In addition, many organizations have started to offer training and education programs for family members and friends of those with opioid addiction. These programs provide information on the signs and symptoms of an opioid overdose, how to administer naloxone, and what to do in the event of an overdose.
The Benefits of Naloxone
Naloxone has numerous benefits. It is a safe and effective drug with few side effects, making it easy to administer. It can be used to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose, potentially saving the life of someone who would otherwise die due to an overdose. It is also increasingly becoming more available and accessible, making it easier for family members and friends of those with opioid addiction to obtain naloxone.
In addition, naloxone can be used to reduce the number of opioid-related fatalities. This can help to reduce the burden on first responders, who are often the first to arrive on the scene of an opioid overdose. Naloxone can also be used to reduce the number of opioid-related hospitalizations, which can help to reduce healthcare costs.
The Cost of Naloxone
The cost of naloxone can vary depending on the form in which it is administered. Injectable naloxone typically costs between $30 and $120 per dose. The nasal spray form of naloxone typically costs between $50 and $150 per dose. In some states, naloxone is available over the counter at pharmacies without a prescription.
In addition, many states have passed laws that allow pharmacists to dispense naloxone without a prescription. This can make it easier for family members and friends of those with opioid addiction to obtain naloxone at a reduced cost.
Conclusion
While Naloxone can saves lives, people still need to focus on better choices and avoid substance abuse and live cleaner lives

Children with ADHD can be a lot to handle. They are constantly distracted and on the move and can get into things if not properly monitored. Parents can become quickly frustrated with these antics and lose their cool. Parents can add fuel to the fire by responding improperly to ADHD behavior. It is important to understand how to respond to children with ADHD as to better control the behavior and help the child cope.
Parenting can be stressful enough, but with ADHD children it can become a difficult route if one does not know how to cope with ADHD symptoms
The article, “2 Things It’s Best Not to Say to Children With ADHD” by Anthony Smith takes a closer look at how to properly manage a child with ADHD. He warns against fueling ADHD behavior and making it worst by avoiding certain actions and behaviors. In particular, he lists the comments “Will You Behave” and “Can you stop and just focus” as two phrases to avoid. He states,
“People who encounter kids with ADHD are frequently guilty of two phrases that ultimately add to their frustration and contribute to a negative self-perception and possibly conduct issues. If you know someone with ADHD, or you encounter such individuals on the job and aren’t sure what to say, avoiding the following two phrases will likely up your game, especially if replaced with the suggested alternatives.”

As a parent of a child with ADHD, you may experience a range of emotions, including frustration, guilt, and helplessness. It’s important to remember that you’re not alone in this journey. With the right strategies and support, you can help your child thrive.
ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder that impairs a person’s ability to focus and self-regulate. It’s estimated that up to 11 percent of children between the ages of 4 and 17 have been diagnosed with ADHD, making it one of the most common mental health disorders in children. While there is no single cause of ADHD, research suggests that genetics, environmental factors, and brain development may all play a role.
Identifying ADHD in Your Child
It’s important to identify ADHD early, as early intervention can be key in managing the disorder. Symptoms of ADHD vary and can range from difficulty paying attention to impulsivity and hyperactivity. Some children may be more hyperactive or impulsive, while others may have difficulty staying focused or organized.
If your child is exhibiting any of the following symptoms, they may have ADHD:
Difficulty paying attention or staying focused
Easily distracted
Impulsivity
Difficulty following instructions
Hyperactivity
Poor organizational skills
If you think your child may have ADHD, it’s important to speak with your pediatrician. They can provide a thorough medical evaluation and refer you to a mental health professional for further testing and diagnosis.
Understanding ADHD and Learning how to Parent a Child with it
Once your child is diagnosed with ADHD, it’s important to learn as much as you can about the disorder. Understanding the signs, symptoms, and treatments of ADHD can help you better manage your child’s condition and provide them with the resources they need.
The key to successful parenting of a child with ADHD is to create a positive and structured environment. This means setting clear expectations, creating routines and schedules, and providing positive reinforcement when your child meets those expectations. Additionally, it’s important to be aware of your own emotions and reactions, as your attitude and behavior can have a significant impact on your child’s mental health.
Tips for Parenting a Child with ADHD
Here are some tips for parenting a child with ADHD:
Establish clear rules and expectations. Set boundaries and be consistent with them.
Praise your child when they do something positive. Positive reinforcement can be a powerful tool for motivating good behavior.
Break tasks down into smaller, manageable steps. This can help your child stay focused and on task.
Set aside time for one-on-one activities that your child enjoys. This can help build your child’s self-esteem and allow them to practice self-regulation.
Limit distractions in the home. Turn off the TV and limit screen time.
Get organized. Create a designated space for your child’s schoolwork, toys, and other items.
Be patient. Parenting a child with ADHD can be challenging, but it’s important to remain patient and consistent.
Setting Limits and Creating Structure
Setting limits and creating structure is key to parenting a child with ADHD. Clear expectations and boundaries can help your child stay focused and on task. It’s also important to be consistent with these limits, as consistency can help your child develop a sense of security and predictability.
Create a routine and stick to it. Routines can help your child stay organized and on track. Have your child take part in creating the routine, as this can help them take ownership of their responsibilities. Additionally, provide rewards and consequences for good and bad behavior. Rewards can be used to motivate good behavior, while consequences should be used sparingly and only when necessary.
Developing Routines and Schedules
Having a daily routine and schedule can be helpful for a child with ADHD. Routines provide structure and can help your child stay focused and on task. Additionally, they can help your child develop time management skills, which can be invaluable both in school and in life.
When creating a routine or schedule, involve your child in the process. This can help them take ownership of their responsibilities and give them a sense of control. Additionally, it’s important to be flexible and understand that it may take some time for your child to adjust to the new routine.
Building Self-Esteem and Self-Confidence
Self-esteem and self-confidence can be a challenge for children with ADHD. It’s important to provide your child with positive reinforcement and praise when they do something positive. Additionally, try to focus on your child’s strengths and encourage them to pursue activities that they enjoy. This can help boost their self-esteem and give them a sense of accomplishment.
It’s also important to be aware of your own reactions and emotions. Children with ADHD can often feel overwhelmed by their own emotions and overwhelmed by the expectations of others. If your child is struggling, it’s important to provide them with a safe space to express their feelings and provide them with comfort and reassurance.
Understanding and Responding to Challenging Behaviors
Children with ADHD often exhibit challenging behaviors, such as impulsivity, hyperactivity, and difficulty following instructions. It’s important to be patient and understanding when confronting challenging behaviors. Talk to your child and try to understand the root cause of their behavior. Additionally, it’s important to remain consistent and provide clear expectations and consequences.
It’s also important to provide your child with positive reinforcement for good behavior. Praise them when they do something positive and reward them for meeting expectations. This can help motivate good behavior and boost their self-esteem.
How to Communicate With Your Child About ADHD
Communication is key when it comes to parenting a child with ADHD. It’s important to create an open and honest dialogue with your child about their condition. Explain their diagnosis in age-appropriate terms and help them understand their feelings and behaviors. Additionally, it’s important to be understanding and reassuring when your child is struggling.
It’s also important to provide your child with accurate information about ADHD and its treatments. This can help your child better understand their condition and feel more empowered to manage their symptoms.
Dealing with Stress and Anxiety
Parenting a child with ADHD can be stressful and overwhelming. It’s important to take time for yourself and practice self-care. Make time for activities that you enjoy and find ways to reduce stress, such as exercising or meditating. Additionally, it’s important to seek out support from family and friends.
If stress becomes too overwhelming, it’s important to speak with a mental health professional. They can provide you with the support and resources you need to better manage your stress and emotions.

The causes of a temper can be multifaceted and are likely contingent on an individual’s physiological, psychological, and environmental factors. For example, a person may have an increased propensity for outbursts due to a genetic predisposition towards emotional instability or impulsivity. Additionally, psychosocial stressors such as interpersonal conflict or economic insecurity can contribute to the development of a temper. Cognitively, a temper may result from the individual’s appraisal of a situation as threatening or frustrating and their subsequent decision to engage in aggressive behavior as an adaptive coping strategy in order to restore their sense of control. Emotionally, anger is often caused by perceived injustice or violation of personal values and beliefs.
Anger in itself is not bad but when misused or allowed to take control of a situation then it can become dangerous to everyone involved. It is hence important to utilize Anger Management techniques. Controlling one’s temper is key and important to a healthier life style. Controlling one’s temper is an integral part of self-regulation, as it involves the ability to inhibit impulsivity and channel emotional reactions in a constructive way. It requires individuals to be aware of their visceral reactions, recognize the emotions behind them, and attempt to modulate these affective states in order to maintain composure. This process necessitates a degree of cognitive control, whereby conscious thought can override automatic responses and facilitate more appropriate behavior.
Controlling one’s temper can be achieved through a variety of techniques, such as cognitive reappraisal or emotion regulation strategies. Cognitive reappraisal involves the conscious reframing of situations in order to reduce emotional arousal and diminish the likelihood of an outburst. Additionally, emotion regulation strategies involve techniques such as distraction, relaxation, and mindfulness that help to reorient attention away from anger-provoking stimuli. Cognitive restructuring involves examining one’s beliefs about the situation that has caused their temper to flare up and assessing whether those beliefs are realistic and helpful. Mindfulness involves becoming aware of one’s emotions and thoughts without attempting to suppress or judge them; instead, an individual is encouraged to observe them from a non-judgmental stance.

Christian Counseling is based off Biblical teachings and morals. In fact, the word Biblical Counseling is many times used with the term Christian Counseling as the same word. Individuals who utilize the Bible then must have a strong understanding of it. Study, education and faith are all required in properly utilizing Scripture in helping others. Hermeneutics looks at ways the Church has always interpreted Scripture and its passages. It looks to properly define and understand a particular teaching. Furthermore Scriptural literal criticisms help the student of Scripture understand the language and context and history of the text itself.
When studying Scripture, one must understand while written by men across the centuries it is still one masterful work by the Holy Spirit. In this a proper understanding of themes that are interwoven throughout the whole must be comprehended and believed while also acknowledging the human element at work. This is why the use of Scripture can be misused by others when not properly trained in theology and history of the Bible. Christian Counselors and Biblical Counselors hence must have a strong study of the Bible.
