Certification in Grief Counseling: A Case for Watching Time of Death

The article, “A Case for Watching Time of Death”, by Rev. Dr. Martha R. Jacobs

“We don’t always have the luxury of being able to manage our death, but there are options other than aggressive treatment that may be more appropriate for us — depending on whether quality of life or quantity of life is more important to us.”

American Institute Health Care Professionals’ insight:

Certification in Grief Counseling

This is a good blog to remind people of the importance of not avoiding the topic of death with our loved ones.  These are themes and questions that cannot be answered after they are gone and in some cases, not comfortable conversation when the person is sick or terminally ill.

A healthy respect for death teaches us that we live today and should do what is needed.  Grief counselors encourage a healthy discussion of death among family members.  When we have a morbid phobia of death, it can cause problems later.

The blogger encourages people to watch “Time Of Death”, a documentary about this subject to help open up people and their eyes to the reality of death for themselves and their loved ones.

If you would like to take grief counseling courses, then please review the site and blog.  Overall, there are four courses in the grief counseling program.  After completion of those courses, a qualified professional is eligible for certification in grief counseling. If you have any questions, please let us know.

Grief Counseling Program Book Review: Love Beyond Rainbows, Grandpa Has Cancer

Grief Counseling Program for Children

The Grief Counseling Program for children and their grief is a specialty we offer at the Academy for grief counselors who wish to specialize and help children face grief.  How many times do we see children and their grief overlooked or marginalized.  Children, while not as mentally developed, need their grief addressed in proportion to their understanding of the situation.  They must be heard and allowed to grieve as well, if we hope to prevent future complications.

One tool to help Child Grief Counselors deal with the pain of children are books.  Gayle Jeanine Haven’s book, entitled, “Love Beyond the Rainbows, Grandpa Has Cancer” is an excellent tool for children to relate and understand the pain they are experiencing with the potential loss of a grandparent.

The story revolves around a little boy and his relationship with his grandfather. Throughout the story, the little boy learns to adapt to the needs of his grandfather.  The things they once did are now replaced with him being involved in care and conversation with his grandfather.  One example from the story is how the little boy accompanied grandpa to the hospital for treatments.  He brings a book to read as does his grandfather.  Time is still spent but in a different way.

The boy understands the reality that his grandfather will die but is allowed to share in the final days and in a healthy way to express his grief and pain.   In the end, he is told by his grandfather that they will meet again one day over the rainbow.

This is an excellent book for little children experiencing the painful reality of losing a grandparent.  It is also a good tool for child grief counselors to utilize during sessions with children experiencing the pain of a terminally ill relative.

In Faith We Find Forgiveness

Christian Counselors and Helping People Receive God’s Forgiveness

This Sunday, I heard a very interesting sermon on the healing of the bleeding woman and about faith.  I would like to surmise it for Christian Counselors to maybe also use when helping people receive the grace of forgiveness from Christ.

In the Gospel of St. Luke, Jesus cured the bleeding woman.  She was considered unclean by Jewish law.  While the Book of Job demonstrated that sin is not directly correlated with sickness, the Jewish people of that time still held strong to the opinion that sickness and sin were directly related.  Due to this, she was considered a sinner and an outcast.

With great faith and great courage she touched the garment of the Jesus.  Jesus later told her, “your faith has healed you”.   After she was healed, she no longer dwelt upon the past but embraced her healing and new life.

Our faith also heals us.  When he have faith that God will forgive and heal us of our spiritual maladies, then we find a peace and love of God.  Through the sacrifice of Christ, our sins are forgiven and the grace of the Holy Spirit fills our soul, but we must have faith that through Christ, our sins are forgiven.  We must also embrace our new life.  Like the woman who was healed through faith, she did not later again begin to bleed, but remained healed.  We too must understand that God will heal us spiritually.  We cannot fall back into sin or linger in the past but instead rejoice in the present for our healing.

Once healed, the time for remorse is over, it is now time to rejoice and spread the mercy of God to others.  The woman did not fall back into sickness but became a follower of Christ, so we must too after receiving our spiritual healing, not fall back into sin, or remorse, but instead allow the Spirit to flower within us and bring Christ to others.

If you would like to become a Christian Counselor, then please review the program.  If you have any questions, please let us know and we will be happy to help you

What is a Health Coach? And How Can They Help You?

American Institute Health Care Professionals’ insight:

What is a Health Coach?

In the healthcare landscape of America, most people react to their illnesses by going to the doctor.   The doctor looks them over and usually give them instructions and medication.    This reaction to sickness has caused doctors and healthcare professionals to become overworked.   Many doctors are now even telling their patients to take preventative measures such as more exercise and eating a healthier diet.   This leads to the question is life coaching advice better for you than an overworked doctor?

First what is a health coach and how can a health coach help you?  Simple!   Health coaching professionals specialize in dieting and exercise.   With their knowledge, they help you eat healthy and keep your body good physical and mental condition.    Many times being physically fit helps boost your immune system.

We are not saying a health coach should replace your doctor completely.   If you are sick please see a doctor!  What is being suggested is take preventative care of your body through healthcare coaching advice.    Keep your heart and lungs in good shape by doing moderate cardio exercises.   Keep your body lean by lifting and eating a proper healthy diet.    All of these things add up and increase your overall health.    By staying in good shape you can prevent the need to go to the doctor by preventing the illness from “getting you sick” to begin with!

So it is suggested that instead of sitting and waiting for your next cold, why not try and prevent it with healthcare coaching tips.    If you are interested in learning more about online health coach training courses please visit the American Institute of Health Care Professionals.   They offer online continuing education courses in several healthcare areas.

States with med-mal award caps see faster growth in awards than national average, study finds | Vital Signs | The healthcare business blog from Modern Healthcare

The article, “States with med-mal award caps see faster growth in awards than national average, study finds”, by  Joe Carlson states

“States with laws capping non-economic damages in medical malpractice cases are seeing faster growth in jury awards than the national average, a new study says. Much of that growth stems from catastrophic injuries involving obstetric services.”

American Institute Health Care Professionals’ insight:

This is a good article for certified legal nurse consultants.  It reviews the various states with med-mal award caps and how they compare to the national average.

The article also reviews how childhood malpractices carry a higher financial claim than others.  This is quite obvious since their is an entire life before the child.  These cases average around 1.4 million as compared to adult claims which total around 500,000.

If you want to become a legal nurse consultant, then please review our site and program.

Health Care News for Health Care Professionals: What Are Some Treatments For Loose Teeth?

Health Care News for Health Care Professionals

Loosening of teeth is one of the most common oral problems. It is usually indicative of another underlying disease such as periodontitis or gingivitis. It starts with minor and negligible mobility of the teeth, however, if not taken care of in earlier stages, it may result in loss of teeth. Health Care Professionals can help reduce the chance of this with their patients through diligent care and instruction to their patients.

As in the case of any oral health problem, prevention is the best type of cure. So, it is important to take good care of your oral health in order to avoid loose teeth problems. Yet, gum diseases and oral health are not always the reason behind loose teeth. Accidents and traumas can also result in loose teeth. Similarly, people who suffer from bruxism, bite injury or oral tumor are also likely to face the problem of teeth mobility. Depending on the cause of loose teeth, the type of treatment required will also vary in each case.

Here are some of the most common treatments for loose teeth.

Scaling

Scaling or deep cleansing of the pockets developed due to bacteria is one of the common treatments for cure of loose teeth caused by gum diseases. The bacteria play a critical part in weakening the bond between the bone and the ligament. While deep cleansing alone can cure the problem in many cases, it can also be one of the first steps for more comprehensive treatments of worse conditions.

In scaling, the dentist uses special tools to scrape the tartar off the teeth and gums. However, cleansing is only good for stopping the prevalence of the problem. In order to improve the current condition of the patient, tissue-stimulating proteins are used in order to allow the gum tissue to re-tighten around the bone.

Root Planning

Like scaling, root planning is also a treatment for loose teeth caused by a gum disease. However, root planning is only effective in earlier stages when the teeth are just beginning to loosen. Root planning involves the reshaping of the teeth in order to eliminate irregular spots that facilitate accumulation of bacteria and germs. If performed in earlier stages, root planning allows the gum tissue to heal and regenerate naturally.

Some dentists, however, may also suggest the use of tissue-stimulating proteins to expedite the process of healing and retightening.

Occlusal Adjustment

Occlusal adjustment or bite adjustment is the preferred treatment for teeth loosening due to bite injury or teeth grinding (bruxism). Occlusion is a term used to describe the way upper and lower teeth meet together. Injury or bruxism can damage the surface of the teeth and result in improper occlusion. Unequal or unadjusted occlusion causes the teeth to receive more force when taking a bite. This can be adjusted by reshaping of the teeth through selective grinding. This procedure must be conducted by a dentist who has proper knowledge and understanding of jaw and bite functions.

Splinting

Teeth often become mobile when there is too much space between them. Splinting, often following the occlusal adjustment, is a treatment that joins the loose or mobile teeth with the firmer ones. It allows even distribution of the bite force and prevents further loosening of teeth. There are several different types of splinting treatment. Your dentist will be able to choose the right one depending on the condition and cause of your problem.

Extraction

Teeth that have become loose and mobile to a great extent can cause a lot of pain and discomfort. The condition of such teeth can further aggravate the situation by affecting the adjacent teeth as well. So, if treatment is delayed for long enough, extraction is the only cure left. Extraction is usually followed by dental implant surgery.

Physical Fall Activities You Can Do! Health Coaching Advice

Health Coaching Advice on How to Stay Active During Fall.

The Fall is one of the nicest seasons to work out. It’s not insanely hot like the summer, and not as frigid as the winter. Before we get started with these great ways to work out, it’s important to know two things. The first – stay extra hydrated. Sometimes cool air doesn’t make us feel as thirsty, but it’s still important to keep hydrated. The second – wear proper attire. Layering is usually the best method. Wear a sweatshirt with a moisture wicking shirt underneath. When you get warm, you can take off the sweatshirt. Whether you’re making a last ditch effort to get fit for ski season, or simply trying to get in shape, try some of these easy fall activities:

Hiking:

Hiking is perhaps the most stress-free and relaxing fall workout. There’s not much that can beat walking through the refreshing air and checking out the fall foliage. It’s one of the best calorie burning workouts you can do, and it doesn’t stress the joints like running may. Plus, it’s a lot more interesting than running the same path every day. Take some coffee along for the trip, and have lunch at the top of the mountain. Christmas card pictures, anyone?

Ultimate Frisbee:

Ultimate Frisbee is fun for anybody, regardless of your age or gender. Think of something like football without the impact; as long as you have two hands and two feet, you can do it. It involves passing the frisbee along the field until you get to the goal. Although rules may differ, you can usually hold on to the frisbee for only a few steps. This usually translates into teammates throwing long tosses to try and get down the field as quickly as possible. And that means a lot of running.

Trampoline:

Trampolines really aren’t just for kids. You’ll know if you’re truly in shape within one minute of stepping on one. If you find yourself saying, “Wow, I’m really tired” then it may be just the time to start a trampoline routine. It’s an excellent cardio workout. So go out and get one, and remember to be safe. Investing in a safety net may be a good idea, as well as practicing proper jumping technique. And hey, maybe you’ll learn a few tricks later on.

Biking:

Biking is a cut-and-dried activity if you’re just riding around the neighborhood. You can make it a lot more interesting. Try ditching the car and taking a bike to work. Or how about mountain biking? And if you’re feeling really spontaneous, try a fixed gear bike. You can’t coast, so you’re basically forced to work out. If you’ve never ridden one, your local bike shop will probably have one for you to test. It’ll give you an amazing workout. Whatever type of biking you do, it’ll tone your body and boost your energy.

Longboarding:

This might be the right activity if you’re a millennial, and you will see women doing it. Longboarding is technically a form of skateboarding, which is considered a “moderately intense aerobic activity.” Except on a longboard, you can just cruise around instead of doing tricks. It’ll improve your balance, increase your energy, and above all, it’s really fun. Just wear a helmet and pads!
