American Institute Health Care Professionals’ insight:

Spiritual counselors need to understand more than just their particular spirituality but also need some knowledge in psychology.  Without it, things that are clearly physical can be seen as metaphysical.

Spiritual directors or counselors can help their clients a lot just with basic psychological information about a variety of things ranging from grief to pathologies.  Of course, with this knowledge in psychology, they know when to refer a client to a clinical psychologist or licensed professional.

Spiritual counseling is not a licensed position but a certified one.  This means the state does not regulate it.  This does not mean anyone should just counsel.  Having a knowledge base in psychology is important and critical.

If you are interested in learning more about spiritual counseling, then please review the program.  After taking the core courses in the spiritual counseling program, qualified professionals are eligible for certification.  After three years, the certification is renewed.

Philippines typhoon aftermath: Religion as solace

The article, “Philippines typhoon aftermath: Religion as solace”, by Jethro Mullen states

“The day after the typhoon, Father Edwin Bacaltos stepped out of the compound of the Church of Our Mother of Perpetual Help in central Tacloban and began his work.”

American Institute Health Care Professionals’ insight:

Where was God admits such suffering and pain?  This is a good question and even Christians in moments of despair, feel the need to call it out.  It is human nature to question and become frustrated but like Job, we must find true understanding.

If our life revolves around a contract with God instead of a covenant, then we do not truly love him.   We are his servants and love him for him, not what he does or does not do.

His will is beyond ours and while blatant suffering is not good, nor willed by the Father, nature nevertheless, in this fallen world does strike.

Human free will can also strike us.  So we must be ready for man made evils as well.  The fact is God is there with us during these things.  The world, as a fallen place, is what hurts us, never our Lord

But in these dark times, God’s presence is felt through the help of other good people, or aid.

Christian Counselors should remind their clients as well, that our God did not merely abandon us and teach us through word only but became man and suffered for us and shared in every discomfort we have.  This is a God of action not a God speaking from a distant throne.

If you would like to earn a certification in Christian Counseling, then please review the program.

American Institute Health Care Professionals’ insight:

Want to Learn How to Start Meditating?

Many times we will start something up, just to later quit it down the road.   This often happens with a new exercise routine or a diet.    It can also happen to meditation.   Lucky there are ways to stick with meditation.

Once you have learned how to start meditating, use these tricks of the trade to stay with it.   Try simple things like scheduling it.    More often than not if you write something down and say at 5 PM I need to meditate, you are more likely to do it.    Something simple as writing it down mentally makes us feel the need to complete it.

Try group meditation.   Social pressure can have a big pull at staying with something.    Having someone else lean on you to meditate with them is an excellent way to stay motivated for something.     By doing this you and a friend can help better each other.

Try to schedule your meditation during the time of day where you will be the least distracted.    During that time turn off your phone, computer, tv, etc and dedicate yourself to your meditation.   Do not let anything stop you.   View it as your personal time.

Meditation is easy to do and to teach if you have the right education.    The American Institute of Health Care Professionals has an excellent online meditation instructor certification.   If you feel you would make a good teacher then maybe this is someone you should look into further.

health care life coaches: Five Important Things Before a Doctor Visit

People regardless of any geographical location consider themselves a patient after 100 degree Celsius of fever or something similar. They contact a doctor and doctor give them medicines, in all they waste their time and which can easily be saved if they wait a bit and go through certain checkups on their own and then decided to go to a doctor if there is a need of it.

Here are few of the checks  recommended by Health Care Life Coaches that you should consider doing on your own before contacting a doctor and paying their consultation fee.

–          Symptom check

Most people, women especially, tend to think they’re “sick” and need to check with a doctor about their illness. Why are you so excited about it? Stop. Take a moment to review the symptoms. Are you actually sick? If the symptoms suggest its normal and you can stay home, rest and get better on your own then you definitely don’t need to visit the doctor.

If the symptoms suggest otherwise, of course that’s when you step out of your home. Many medical websites offer the facility to help you check yourself against symptoms. So you definitely need not to panic.

–          Home Remedies

Now that your symptoms say “yes, you are sick”, you still don’t need to run for a doctor. You’ve heard a lot of people tell you of remedies for every single problem, right? Try those out. Of course not like experiments. Make sure they’re approved, tested and give results. If it is a fever, you know the simple old method of cold wet towel. If it is stuffed nose, you know how to steam it out. Even if it is something a bit bigger, try something a bit better.

Ask your nanny, your old aunt who always keeps telling you “you’ll get ill if you don’t …” or ask any friend who went through the same problem. The best thing to do is look online on medical websites that are trustworthy.

–          Stress check

This is important! Sometimes, it’s just our hectic routine; the change in schedule causes stress on our body. Be it backache, neck stretch trouble, eye pain, hair loss etc, they could only be because of stress. Our body needs rest; it needs us to take care of it.

Give your body some time to get out of stress. Take proper sleep, food and liquid intakes. You yourself will know whether what you’re facing is actually troublesome or not.

–          Not Improving

So before going to the doctor, does a patient really have to wait and go through all these processes which seem like they’ll take forever? No. Today, approximately 177,000 Americans will visit a doctor, even though they have absolutely no symptoms. That is the only reason why I want you to be careful about visiting the doctor unnecessarily. If your problem is a serious one like cardiac pain, genital pain, even unending fever or relentless flu, you surely need to go to the doctor. As soon as you realize your problem is not settling you don’t need to wait anymore. That’s when you run to the doctor.

–          Doctor Check

The last step and of course the most important one is to know whether the doctor you’re going to visit is a professional and renowned one or not. Don’t go and waste your money and time (the least of your actual problems) with a doctor who is just going to play with your money and order needless tests. Know who you will be visiting and prepare before going. Make a checklist of things you’ll need over there too. Like your prescriptions, allergies, reaction to any drug, questions you want to ask, symptoms you’ve been facing etc. Only good doctors will check your history and discuss with you in detail. When you are unclear with the doctor, it may result in wrong diagnosis thus wrong medicine. Also, doctors who just perform unnecessary surgeries and suggest useless tests must be checked before you go.

Visiting a doctor is important but when you are planning to visit unnecessarily, it wastes your time and money. The idea is to keep the above given checks in mind and then if you think visiting a doctor is important then you should not wait for a second more and visit the best doctor for your problem.

Grief Counseling Program Book Review: Love Beyond Rainbows, Grandpa Has Cancer

Grief Counseling Program for Children

The Grief Counseling Program for children and their grief is a specialty we offer at the Academy for grief counselors who wish to specialize and help children face grief.  How many times do we see children and their grief overlooked or marginalized.  Children, while not as mentally developed, need their grief addressed in proportion to their understanding of the situation.  They must be heard and allowed to grieve as well, if we hope to prevent future complications.

One tool to help Child Grief Counselors deal with the pain of children are books.  Gayle Jeanine Haven’s book, entitled, “Love Beyond the Rainbows, Grandpa Has Cancer” is an excellent tool for children to relate and understand the pain they are experiencing with the potential loss of a grandparent.

The story revolves around a little boy and his relationship with his grandfather. Throughout the story, the little boy learns to adapt to the needs of his grandfather.  The things they once did are now replaced with him being involved in care and conversation with his grandfather.  One example from the story is how the little boy accompanied grandpa to the hospital for treatments.  He brings a book to read as does his grandfather.  Time is still spent but in a different way.

The boy understands the reality that his grandfather will die but is allowed to share in the final days and in a healthy way to express his grief and pain.   In the end, he is told by his grandfather that they will meet again one day over the rainbow.

This is an excellent book for little children experiencing the painful reality of losing a grandparent.  It is also a good tool for child grief counselors to utilize during sessions with children experiencing the pain of a terminally ill relative.
