Advent as Grateful Waiting for God’s Gift of Spiritual Companionship

The article, “Advent as Grateful Waiting for God’s Gift of Spiritual Companionship”, by Donovan Ackley III, Ph.D. states

“Waiting has been a powerful spiritual theme in my life, especially with regard to decades of delay in being able to live as a fully adult man, delayed for decades as a transgender person stalled by both doctors and religious mentors in a wilderness experience of confusion and falsehood.”

American Institute Health Care Professionals’ insight:

Christian Counselors await the birth of Christ, like all Christians.  Advent is thus a time of waiting and preparing ourselves as the patriarchs of old awaited the coming of the Messiah.

Spiritual reflection, fasting and good works are an important element of Christmas, especially during the Advent season where we re-celebrate the birht of Christ. Those who are thinking of becoming a certified Christian Counselor can help prepare their spiritual children during Advent.  Whether Protestant, Orthodox or Catholic, any form of spiritual preparation is acceptable.  Advent or in the Eastern Church, Phillip’s Fast does not need to be just for one form of Christianity but can be shared by all, as one Church prepares for the coming of their Savior.   While the spiritual preparation is not as intense, as for Easter,  one should remember it is still a spiritual time.  The amount of parties and Holiday sensationalism sometimes switch the time of preparation as a time of celebration.

The reality is that the Christmas season starts December 25th, in which the Eastern Church proclaims, Christ is born! and our response, Glorify Him!

If you are interested in becoming a certified Christian Counselor, then please review our program in Christian Counseling.  By simply taking the core courses in the Christian Counseling Program, those thinking of becoming a certified Christian Counselor can become certified.

The certification can be renewed after three years.  Within those three years, the certified Christian Counselor must take fifty hours of continuing education and practice five hundred hours worth of Christian Counseling.

In the meantime, if you are thinking of becoming a certified Christian Counselor, then please review our site and blog.  If you have any questions, please let us know.

‘Evil did not win” Newtown Shootings

The article, “‘Evil did not win,’ say parents of Newtown victim as families launch website”, source; Fox News

“Parents of the 20 children killed in the Newtown shooting announced the formation of a singular website Monday dedicated to the memory of all the victims, while one family released an emotional video declaring that evil did not win.”

American Institute Health Care Professionals’ insight:

Becoming a Certified Grief Counselor

Parents continue to show resiliency in their darkest grief in Newtown as they share their stories and courage with the world.  The families have jointly created a new website in commemoration of the deaths of those killed in the Newtown shooting almost a year ago.

Grief counselors or those becoming a certified grief counselor will notice a healthy use of their energy and time as they grieve via constructive ways–namely remembrance.

Parents from the shooting proclaim evil did not win, and that the memory of their child has prompted them to give more to other children and funds.  The love their daughter had for others lives on as they donate in her name to less fortunate children.  In this way, her memory lives on as well as her heart.

They also have been overwhelmed by the love of support of so many other people around the country.  That love and support shows the parents the good that exists in this world despite the evil action that took place.  The support also helps them push forward in their own healing process.

If you are interested in becoming a certified grief counselor, then please review our program.  In becoming a certified grief counselor, qualified professionals take the core four courses and then apply for certification.

After certified, they have three years until they can renew their certification in grief counselingCertified grief counselors need to provide fifty hours of continuing education and fifty hours of practical grief related service.

Sandy Hook dad talks about 911 tapes – CNN.com Video

American Institute Health Care Professionals’ insight:

A sad video about the loss of the families at Sandyhook.  The videos in order talk about the pain of individual parents, the needs they have and the disturbing 911 call.

Compounded with the holidays, the approaching anniversary of the shooting, and the traumatic loss itself, these parents are facing a grief nightmare that no-one can imagine.

The best thing according to grief counselors is for them to talk and for others to listen.

One particular sad moment is how the father of one of the victims, has left the Christmas tree up all year, which was to be decorated the weekend after the shooting took place.  The grief has paralyzed him from decorating the tree.  One can only imagine the pain and suffering and our prayers go out to him and these families.

If you would like to learn how to become a grief counselor then please review our program.  The grief counseling program consists of four core courses.  After completion of those four courses, qualified professionals can become a grief counselor.

After three years, the grief counselor must recertify if he or she wishes to continue.  Recertification requires five hundred hours of grief counseling related work and fifty hours of continuing education in grief counseling.

Depakote – A Medicine You Should Not Take When Pregnant

We all want the best for our children, but what if you find out that they are suffering from a condition that was brought about by a drug that you took while you were pregnant? I’ll bet that it is the hardest feeling in the world, and you have all reasons to feel guilty about yourself. But you don’t have to! You are not the one to blame. It is the medicine that you took in full faith that it will help you out with your health problems.

If you had been prescribed with the psychotic drug Depakote when you were pregnant, then you definitely have cause to blame other parties for your child’s condition!

Side Effects of Depakote

Depakote was intended to be used for the treatment of people with bipolar disorder who suffered from constant seizures. Specifically, it is an anticonvulsant drug. First marketed in 1983, Depakote was used widely in the treatment of bipolar disorder and epilepsy. To some extent, it has also been used to treat migraines as well.

However, Depakote’s successes are also offset by its side effects especially in pregnant women. In 2006, the US Food and Drug Administration released warnings to the public regarding the dangers of using Depakote while pregnant. This was when its research and studies revealed that a staggering 20 percent of pregnant women who were prescribed Depakote had given birth to children with defects. These defects include:

  • Anencephaly, or underdevelopment of the brain and skull. This usually results to stillborn babies or babies that die shortly after being born.
  • Spina bifida, or the failure of the spinal column to seal itself shortly before childbirth. This usually results to leg paralysis.
  • Heart defects
  • Cleft lip and palate

In a nutshell, the side effects of Depakote on the newborn can really affect their health and the quality of their lives as they grow up. That definitely is not something we would want for our children, and one more reason for you to sue Abbott Pharmaceuticals Inc. for damages and the corresponding financial compensation for your suffering.

Why Sue?

While you had willingly taken Depakote because it was prescribed to you by your physician, you had done so in full faith. After all, the drug’s labeling initially did not indicate or warn against any possible risks especially for pregnant women. This constitutes gross misconduct and negligent misrepresentation in the part of Abbott. Although the drug has been given a black box label in 2006, it has been 22 years between the drug’s release and the publishing of the black label. Countless women have already seen the often fatal side effects of the drug on their children.

If you have suffered side effects, then it’s time for a visit to a known Depakote attorney. This is the person that can truly help you when you finally claim for damages from Abbott for all the suffering that using Depakote has brought upon you. Make sure to bare it all before your attorney so he can build a solid case that you can bring to Court and expect to win!

Child Grief Counseling Program: 5 Tips for Helping Children Cope With Loss

Our child grief counseling program can help prepare you to help children cope and grieve properly, especially during the Holidays

The article, “When the Holidays Aren’t Joyous: 5 Tips for Helping Children Cope With Loss”, by Bonnie Rubenstein

“For kids, the holidays are supposed to be filled with joy and excitement. However, for some children who have suffered a recent loss, the holidays can be especially hard.”

American Institute Health Care Professionals’ insight:

Are You Walking Your Mantra?

The article, “Are You Walking Your Mantra?”, by Ora Nadrich states

“If we all walked around holding a beautiful mantra in our mind, imagine what kind of “spiritual transformation” we would be creating collectively.”

American Institute Health Care Professionals’ insight:

This article about meditation just simply asks the question if you are really living your mantra in your daily life or just going through the process during meditation

Allowing your mantra to take root and produce fruits in your daily life is key.  The grace of God can come through and help you do the good you intend or the happiness you desire. This is why it is important to live your mantra and not just speak it during prayer.  Quick recitation or skipping steps can disrupt the positive effects that meditation can give you.  The words need to have meaning and be carried out of your quiet spot.

If you would like to become a meditation instructor, then please review the program.  To become a meditation instructor, qualified professionals need to complete the meditation courses.  After completion of these courses, the professional becomes eligible to be certified in meditation.

For those who wish to recertify, one must complete five hundred hours of meditation instruction and complete fifty hours of meditation continuing education.

In the meantime, please enjoy our blog and articles and if you have any questions, please let us know.

A Christian Counselor’s Perspective on the Dangers of Pornography

The article, “A Christian Counselor’s Perspective on the Dangers of Pornography”, by Chris Chandler states

By Chris Chandler, MA, LMHC, CSAT-C , Seattle Christian Counseling, PLLC References “Wired for Intimacy” by William M. Struthers, Ph. D. What’s so bad about porn?”

American Institute Health Care Professionals’ insight:

A very good article from a Christian Counselor about the evils of pornography–the supposed victimless sin.
The reality is as the Chris Chandler points out, it objectifies the participants as well as men and women in general who perform in these vile acts.  It also defiles the intimacy of the sexual union and makes sex a sport instead an act of love.

The people themselves commit fornication and also sin in their corruption of others.

The fact is pornography is far from innocent and is an ever growing evil as it takes people to greater depths of moral deprivation.  If you are a Christian Counselor, how do you deal with this habit among your spiritual children?  Like any sinful habit it can be a trying time as pornography can dominate the soul and ruin relationships.  Christian counselors need to focus on the healing Spirit and pray together with the person.  If Catholic, frequent confession is advisable.  For both Catholics and non-Catholics, meditation, pray and scripture are key to finding purity.  If the person falls, get back up without shame, and know the Lord sees your effort and will eventually cleanse you.  Many times, falling teaches us that we cannot defeat a vice without the Lord

Spiritual care: challenges in a multicultural and multireligious society

Our program in pastoral thanatology prepares people for spiritual and cultural diversity of the dying
Our program in pastoral thanatology prepares people for spiritual and cultural diversity of the dying

The article, “Spiritual care: challenges in a multicultural and multireligious society”, by Piret Paal states

“Piret Paal researcher at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich, explains the key points discussed at a recent German-speaking conference on multireligious spirituality and multiprofessional…”

American Institute Health Care Professionals’ insight:

A good reminder for care givers and social workers in ministry that not all share the same values and faith.

When giving spiritual care in a pastoral setting, one can face many cultural and religious backgrounds that view death, suffering and God from different prisms.  A pastoral care giver needs to be prepared to help people from these different view points.  Pastoral Thanatology is about serving everyone from a spiritual perspective and of human wholeness.  To be better able to accomplish this, a care giver must be well versed in various other cultures and spiritual practices.

A good spiritual counselor, pastoral care giver, or medical care giver should have at least some understanding of different cultures and religions if they are around death and the dying.

If you are interested in learning more about spiritual counseling, then please review the program.  If you are interested on how to become a pastoral care giver for the dying, then review our other programs in grief and pastoral care

Our program in Pastoral Thanatology covers basic core concepts within the field of grief and dying.  After completion of the program, qualified professionals are eligible for certification.
