Christian Meditation with God and Differences of East and West

Meditative Union

For most people, meditation is a serious element of their spiritual life.  With diet fads, Eastern Yoga retreats, Holistic revolutions and better health prompting many people to utilize meditation in their life, it is of no wonder why to many that meditation is not just another healthy life style instead of a theological and spiritual union with God.

While religious experience is the primary motive in these Eastern meditative methods, one can see that the idea of Christianity and other monotheistic creeds greatly differs in theology.  The purpose of Monotheistic meditation is to become closer to God in a creator and creation relationship.  With this different end goal, one may ask does it matter which road one takes to reach these states?Yes, meditation can spring forth physical wellness that stems from spiritual renewal, but this is only a side effect not the primary purpose for religious minded people.  People use meditation to become closer to God.  Meditation allows the soul to escape the noise of the conscious and external world and find the silence and solitude of God’s spirit.  In meditiation a deeper union is granted to people who yet still trapped within a temporal reality can taste a small portion of the eschatological reality.  In some ways, for those who are spiritually gifted and alive, meditation can take one to the brink of the beatific vision.

Christian Meditation Opposes Eastern Meditation

While union with God is always the key of meditation, Christian meditation greatly differs from Eastern meditation.  Eastern meditation seeks the divine, but its theological basis of the divine greatly differs from Western theism.  The idea of God as a being is completely different in Eastern thought.  In fact, Hinduism teaches that Brahma, the principle name for the divine, is in many ways like a blazing fire that releases sparks, called Atman.  Atamn is divine spark of all souls in the temporal reality.  It is the purpose of meditation to help reconnect and to be reabsorbed into this divine essence.  Another example is Buddhism.  Buddhism teaches that the purpose of meditation is to help one reach a state of Nirvana where one can escape suffering and existence itself.Christian meditation looks towards prayer, scripture and Christ to help creation become closer to creator
The reality is from a Monotheistic perspective, some Eastern meditative techniques may be spiritually harmful in the way they open one’s mind and spirit to outside sources.  Monotheistic meditation does not seek to escape the body but hopes to elevate the entire nature of man in union with God.  The body too must share in the beatific vision, while in the East, the body is a prison and only a temporary home of the soul.

With these sharp theological differences, one can see that meditation brings one closer to God, but for different reasons based on different perceptions of divine reality and human existence.  Hence it is important for someone entering into meditation, especially those of Western theology, to clearly understand their end goal and to properly correlate approved meditative practices that coincide with the theology of monotheism.
Those, however, who seek other ends that do not correlate with monotheistic theology and its ends, may find Eastern goals to be more what they find to be true and seek these practices more enthuastically.

Greatest Grief: The Loss of A Child

Loss of a Child and a Certification in Grief Counseling

Within the circles of debate of emotional pain due to loss, many have speculated, and probably correctly, that the most intense emotional loss one can experience is the loss of one’s child.  The ingredients for it are already present: Extreme attachment and an unnatural and unexpected event.
First, the attachment of a parent to a child is unequaled.  Evolutionarily speaking, the drive for one to propagate and replicate one’s genetic DNA is a natural drive.  In nature, the drive to protect one’s offspring is apparent.  So at the first level, at the most instinctive levels of consciousness, one bonds with a child.  Add to the fact that humanity is a rational and sentient species, then one can understand an even deeper attachment with one’s offspring.  A spiritual connection develops and an intimate bond of nourishing and care forms between parent and child.  The child’s first breath, sight, touch, word and movement is all intimately documented by the parent.  This attachment while beautiful and good is also extremely fragile if broken.  It is the ironic cosmic paradox of the universe: one can gain love but lose it.  The greater the attachment, the greater the reaction to the loss of it- And there is no greater attachment than a parent-child bond.
Secondly, the loss of a child transgresses the natural order of life.  A parent is meant to guide and watch the child grow into adulthood.  As the parent ages, the son or daughter ironically then becomes the caretaker of the parent.  Ultimately, children bury their parents, parents usually do not bury their children.  This is especially harder on parents of children whose child dies in his or her youth, but the experience of pain is also great for parents who lose adult offspring .  In addition to this, as in any loss, the traumatic nature of the event may also play roles in the pain of a parent, while also the situation of the parent.  Is the parent older, alone, or financially dependent?

There is no doubt that the loss of a child is a devastating loss.  From tradition, one can merely look at the Pieta which ironically beautifully captures the essence of anguish a parent can experience at the loss of a child.

Pet loss: "Life is a Series of Dogs"

Aging Pets and Pet Loss: Is a New Puppy the Answer?

To quote the great and immortals comedian, George Carlin, “Life is a series of dogs”!  How true it is for life long pet owners.  Usually most can remember the family dog as a young child, then the dog that guided one through adolescents, and of course the dog that was at your side as you made your vows to your wife, then the dog that… you get the point?  But with all these happy moments, pet loss still correlates with these events.  With each sad loss, a new beginning ushers one into a new era.
Of course the new friend may be a different.  He or she may be different in personality, breed or maybe even species?  But the reality is, the new pet can never replace the previous.  Dogs throughout our life are like family members and each one is remembered within our hearts for their unique special traits and partnerships they formed with us during a particular phase of our life.
So when one finds a new friend, do not consider it a replacement but an addition to one’s family.  A legacy, a continuation of dogs that are all intimately tied to one’s life.
In my particular situation, we have always had a tradition of passing the torch.  There is always new life, a puppy, in the house as the previous generation approaches its evening years.  In this way, from the first Siberian Husky I grew up with to the latest three that now “own” the home have all in some way been connected by a previous generation that knew the previous one before that.
So the decision to get a puppy does not become a need to overcome sorrow but a continuation of the family which allows the spirits of the previous generations to share with the new.  In this way the decision to get a new puppy is always a “yes”.

Role of the Registered Nurse in Disease Management

 Disease Management and Nursing

Disease management is a holistic approach towards provision of health care services to an individual or population that has symptoms of certain illnesses. It encompasses the combination and coordination of various systems towards the provision of an all-encompassing approach in terms of delivery of health care services.
The role of RN in disease management cannot be overlooked as they play an important part in the success stories of the program, Disease management involves various aspects such as the economical, clinical and psychosocial aspects deemed necessary in the provision of health care. This approach aims to have a positive effect and result in the adjustment of health-related behavior patterns in patients, health care providers and consumers bringing about the reduction of severe cases or incidences of certain diseases or disorders. Adjustments on any health behavior pattern undergo a verification and support process that seeks continuous progress. This process offers up to the minute feedback and works on the basis of particular health conditions in addition to a string of apt population procedures and outcomes.
Besides working towards attaining a favorable clinical outcome, disease management programs also focus on utilizing the most cost-efficient outcome suitable for a particular group of patients. A disease management program consists of three major components: a) Proper understanding relating to the natural and the estimated financial history as regards medical condition; b) The health care provision system; and c) a continuous progressive process that is able to measure and analyze outcomes. It is important to note that this medical approach makes the most use of the principle of self-care.

Principles of Disease Management

The basic principle of disease management focuses on empowering patients so that they can be able to provide almost 95 percent self care when suffering from chronic illnesses. In this scenario, the patient is tasked with the responsibility of taking care of their health by adopting good eating habits and a healthy lifestyle. Though disease management campaigns for self care, it is well-aware that lack of adequate knowledge and skill set on the part of patients more so when going about health practices and disease prevention may lead to poor quality health care.
The program takes into account three assumptions: a) a knowledgeable patient is better placed to handle their condition as opposed to one who lacks the knowledge; b) The patient is the main beneficiary of the health care provided to them thus they have a right to demand for quality management of their disease; c) patients play a significant role in their final clinical outcome therefore there is need for them to gain knowledge for them to manage their own condition. In this regard, the program utilizes education tools to educate patients with relevant knowledge.
These education tools including treatment guidelines as well as educational resources play a significant role in the overall accomplishment of any program. Additionally, not only do patient education components educate patients on their responsibility but also emphasize on the involvement of other family members in actively participating in the patient’s self care management. Registered nurses bring a lot to the table as they act as disease management supervisors. They work mainly in hospitals, insurance companies, commercial health management corporations, outpatient facilities and doctors’ clinics. In order for one to be a registered nurse, they must complete a nursing program where they learn various aspects such as behavioral modification techniques, disease prevention and health promotion. Armed with a solid educational background, the nurses seamlessly transition into this medical field. The premier responsibility of nurses in relation to disease management is to work as agents of change.
In present times, much focus is placed on the delivery of health care services to individual patients. On the contrary, the focus should change to tackling chronic ailments using a population-based method. The soaring costs of health care can be countered by emphasizing on strict observance of clinical practice regulations, ensuring that the patient population receives the undergoes diagnostic tests in the right time and making sure the patient population takes the prescribed medicine to the letter. Additionally, nurses enlighten both patients and other health workers on gaining knowledge of behavioral adjustment techniques as well as their use. Furthermore, the nurses encourage the patients to get actively involved in providing self care. Also, the nurses act as patient advocates, fighting for their rights as well as reminding patients about their responsibilities.
