Funeral Assistants: The Role of Grief Work in the Funeral

Funeral Assistants: Do People Need to Partake More in the Funeral?

The role of a funeral director and sometimes a funeral assistant is to plan the funeral.  Yet, is this good for the person and their recovery over a loss?  We tend to think that allowing a person sometime to himself is the best answer to recover but studies show a person who takes an active role in the funeral accepts the reality quicker and adjusts in a more healthy fashion.
This is because they are putting their grief to work.  They are acknowledging the death and utilizing their sorrow in a positive fashion.  The work of ordering flowers, display and food arrangements help allow the person to have some control in this sad movement and also allow the wife, husband, daughter or son to give back to their beloved and lost
While we cannot force the issue, we can encourage a small part to be played for those grieving the loss of their loved one.  In this way, the funeral assistant is not only performing a service for the deceased but also playing a critical role in grief support.

Program In Christian Counseling: Can East & West Coexist With Married Priests?

American Institute Health Care Professionals’ insight:

An excellent article on celibacy in the church.  The Orthodox and the Eastern Catholics already have a married priesthood.  Hence there should be no issue if this can exist within the Catholic Church when it already does.  It would just not exist within the Latin and Western Rites. If you would like to review our program in christian counseling, then please take sometime and see if it matches your educational and professional needs.

Pastoral Thanatolgy and Fears of the Dying

Pastoral Thanatology: What Do the Dying Fear

Pastoral Thanatology is the study of dying and how to help care for people pastorally.  Hence this title is very appropriate not only in understanding the nature of dying but also helping those in spiritual and mental anguish.
Overall this can be a very subjective question because it depends on the spiritual make up of an individual.  Are you an atheist who believes you will cease to exist?  Are you a Hindu, who believes you will probably return as another person?  Are you a Theist and believe that there is a spiritual world of reward or damnation awaiting you?
Again psychologically how did you deal with death your whole life?  Did you avoid it?  Did you fear it?  Or did you openly deal with it or were exposed to it?  How did death affect you when you dealt with it?  How did you grieve?  Were you taught to conceal or reveal your pain?
All these questions circle around an individual in their perspective of death.  Yet as a human person, we for the most part all share common traits and anxieties about the unknown certainty of death.  This unknown element can bring certain concerns or fears no matter how well we dealt with death in our lives.
Kubler Ross in her book, “Death: The Final Stage of Growth” looked into a program called “The Living Until Death Program” which sought to give consolation to the dying and also gain a greater insight into death.  Many were judged based upon the Emotional Adjustment Scale.  This scale looked at a person’s ability to cope interiorly and exteriorly to one’s approaching death.  It looked at a variety of sociological factors as well, including age, sex, type of disease, religion, etc.
Many of the patients in the study looked for four things to find stabilization.  Some found faith, oneself, a spouse or the physician in aiding their emotional adjustment to the pending reality of death.  For the elderly the biggest concern and fear was not death itself but they wished not to burden their family.  Half the patients also expressed fear of being separated from their loved ones.  Life no longer having any meaning was another dread as the dying patient approached the finish line.
While fear of pain and suffering are always a high priority, I feel many of these fears subside to the more lasting realities of separation from loved ones and the fear of the unknown.  This is why is it so important to have a healthy dialogue with death while alive.
I cannot relate to agnostics or atheists, but the belief in an afterlife is a soothing reflection I have to this day and one I will undoubtedly have upon the time of my death.

The Final Stage of Growth: Death

Grief Counseling and Accepting Death

In a very paradox way, death teaches us about living.  This was the insight of Elisabeth Kubler Ross.  Her life was dedicated to the dying and helping them find peace in their final days and hours.   Her teaching and philosophy laid the ground work for many ideas in grief counseling.
Kubler Ross believed denial of death was unhealthy and noticed that people who avoided the subject lived empty lives.  She believed that only through accepting death would we come to the realization that life is not forever and that we have only so much time on earth to accomplish what needs done.
In addition to this, Kubler Ross did not see death as the final chapter, but a new beginning.  She believed that beyond this reality was a greater one where the spirit lives on.  A new transformation begins at the moment of death where we enter into a new reality of existence.  Even if one is not a theist, Kubler Ross pointed out that our memory, good deeds, and way of life can be etched in stone for future generations, achieving a different type of eternity.
In this way, Kubler Ross hoped to change Western Culture’s taboo views on death and to make death a topic at dinner tables or general conversation.  How can we truly understand each other, our needs, wants and future desires, if this topic is laid to rest?  In accepting death well before it comes, we can have a better understanding of it and its nature.  If we understand that in order for us to exist we must one day also die, then we can approach the grim reaper with a smile and embrace.
In conclusion, True spiritual growth requires a healthy respect and awe for death not as a killer but a liberator.
