The following CE courses are required to complete the Telehealth & Triage Nursing Certification Curriculum to qualify for certification with AIHCP.

TH 500 – Nursing Assessment & Rapid Triage

This advanced professional nursing CE course offers a comprehensive, evidence-based exploration of emergency nursing triage guided by the Rapid Access Guide for Triage and Emergency Nurses: Chief Complaints with High-Risk Presentations by Lynn Sayre Visser and Anna Sivo Montejano. Designed for nurses working in emergency departments, urgent care settings, and other high-acuity environments, the course equips learners with the essential clinical knowledge and decision-making skills necessary to rapidly identify, prioritize, and respond to patient presentations that may be life-threatening or have significant implications for patient outcomes.

The curriculum focuses on a patient-centered approach to triage, emphasizing assessment priorities, chief complaint recognition, and the interpretation of critical signs and symptoms — often indicated by clearly identifiable “red flag” markers. Learners will engage with evidence-based screening tools, practical checklists, and clinical algorithms to support rapid assessment and safe prioritization of care. The course content covers chief complaints by body system, pediatric and geriatric considerations, legal and waiting room issues, and management of special high-risk clinical scenarios, including trauma and disaster response.

In addition to clinical presentations, the course addresses broader emergency care themes such as patient flow, risk reduction strategies, and key interventions for atypical and complex cases. Practical learning opportunities, including case reviews and application exercises, will strengthen clinical judgment and enhance the ability to make timely, evidence-informed decisions under pressure. Upon successful completion, participants will have deepened their competencies in emergency nursing triage and developed the critical thinking skills required to ensure patient safety and optimize care outcomes in fast-paced clinical environments

TH 510 – Telephonic Nursing Practice

This comprehensive CE course offers an extensive and practical exploration of the challenges, strategies, and competencies essential for effective telehealth practice in modern healthcare. Learners study foundational concepts in telehealth nursing, including the evolution of virtual care, clinical assessment methods, communication nuances, and the broad spectrum of patient presentations encountered through remote encounters.

The curriculum first introduces the history and growth of telehealth nursing and progresses to address key telehealth struggles such as establishing rapport without face-to-face contact, navigating technological barriers, and performing accurate clinical assessments using limited sensory cues. Students engage with enhanced communication techniques like active listening and learn how to interpret patient information when visual and physical assessments are not possible.

As the course advances, learners dive into clinical content organized by body systems and common disease processes, enabling them to recognize and respond to a wide variety of patient needs in telehealth settings. Real-world case studies, algorithms, sample dialogues, and critical thinking exercises are integrated to mirror the complexities and common challenges experienced by telehealth practitioners — from managing chronic conditions remotely to ensuring safe and competent care amidst digital limitations.

Discussion also encompasses the practical struggles telehealth presents, including overcoming technology barriers for patients (such as lack of access or digital literacy), addressing concerns about the quality of virtual care versus in-person visits, and recognizing systemic issues that impact telehealth adoption and equity — especially in resource-limited or rural environments. These barriers and considerations are explored to prepare nurses for the real-world implications of telehealth implementation.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will have developed the critical judgment, communication skills, and telehealth nursing competencies needed to deliver high-quality remote care, and may earn continuing education credits applicable toward professional development requirements. The course is especially suitable for registered nurses, telehealth clinicians, and healthcare providers seeking to strengthen their virtual care knowledge and navigate the everyday struggles inherent in telehealth practice.

Learners explore current research, regulatory considerations, and the evolving dynamics of virtual care delivery across diverse healthcare settings.

The course examines core components of telehealth nursing, including remote assessment techniques, symptom evaluation, risk stratification, documentation standards, patient communication, and legal and ethical considerations. Emphasis is placed on clinical judgment in virtual environments, use of standardized triage protocols, and strategies for ensuring patient safety when in-person assessment is not possible. Content also addresses special populations, chronic disease management, urgent versus non-urgent presentations, and culturally competent care in telehealth encounters.

Through practical examples and applied frameworks, the course prepares nurses to confidently manage real-world telehealth scenarios and support high-quality patient outcomes. This course supports professional development and clinical competence in virtual nursing practice and may be used toward continuing education requirements upon successful completion, in accordance with applicable accrediting guidelines. It is particularly well suited for registered nurses, triage nurses, and healthcare professionals seeking to expand or formalize their skills in telehealth and virtual care delivery.

TH 530 – Psychiatric & Mental Health Triage

Quick and correct thinking is the difference between life and death in the emergency department. Healthcare professionals from staff to nurses to physicians need to make correct diagnosis and assessments under the duress of unpredictable, sometimes aggressive, and life altering circumstances. They must be the calm in the storm and with discipline perform their duties to save lives. This course looks at the numerous assessments for both physical and psychiatric triage and helps orientate the student to the proper methods and procedures to follow for a variety of dangerous and life-threatening situations. Situations that not only involve physical injury requiring medical care, but also situations that involve suicidal patients, intoxicated patients, overdosing patients, confused patients, aggressive patients, as well as patients of different ages, or background. In addition, this course reviews the many ethical, legal, and moral obligations an ED health professional must employ to properly conduct oneself.
