COURSE INFORMATION
This course provides an introduction to the theories and practice of crisis intervention with special concentration in traumatic events/circumstances experienced by clients. The first part of the course focuses on the counseling of victims of violence. Many types of violence, such as domestic and child abuse are presented. Students will learn guidelines for referrals for clients. For each of the types of violence presented, students will learn to address three stages of counseling including crisis intervention, and short-term and long-term interventions. Secondary victimizations are also examined. The second part of the course focuses on training modules for crisis intervention and disaster responders . Many types of crisis situations are examined along with primary interventions for use in practice.

Prerequisites: This course is particularly intended for those who are already certified as Crisis Intervention Specialist by the AIHCP, Inc.

TIME FRAME: You are allotted two years from the date of enrollment, to complete this course. There are no set time-frames, other than the two year allotted time. If you do not complete the course within the two-year time-frame, you will be removed from the course and an “incomplete” will be recorded for you in our records. Also, if you would like to complete the course after this two-year expiration time, you would need to register and pay the course tuition fee again.
GRADING: You must achieve a passing score of at least 70% to complete this course and receive the 50 hours of awarded continuing education credit. There are no letter grades assigned. You will receive notice of your total % score. Those who score below the minimum of 70% will be contacted by AIHCP and will be permitted one more attempt to retake the online examination.

- Examination Access: there is link to take you right to the online examination program where you can print out your examination and work with it. All examinations are formatted as “open book” tests. When you are ready, you can access the exam program at anytime and click in your responses to the questions. Full information is provided in the online classrooms.
- Student Resource Center: there is a link for access to a web page “Student Resource Center.” The Resource Center provides for easy access to all of our policies/procedures and additional information regarding applying for certification. We also have many links to many outside reference sites, such as online libraries that you may freely access.
- Online Evaluation: there is a link in the classroom where you may access the course evaluation. All students completing a course, must, without exception, complete the course evaluation.
- Faculty Access Information: you will have access to your instructor’s online resume/biography, as well as your instructor’s specific contact information.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Understand various theories as they apply to the treatment of trauma
- Understand assessment and the application of various instruments, inventories and scales to gain a better understanding of the clients trauma.
- Understand how people respond when they have been a victim of violence.
- Understand how the kind of violence impacts/influences how a person responds to being a victim.
- Understand the difference and similarities that exist between the various categories of victimization, i.e. victims of crime, hate crime, domestic violence, elder abuse, violence against children, sexual trauma and homicide.
- Understand how being a survivor (i.e. living family member of a murder victim) impacts/influences them.
- Gain an understanding of how to counsel persons who have been victims of violence.
- Understand how people respond when they have been a victim of a disaster.
- Gain an understanding of how to counselor persons who have been victims of a disaster.
- Understand the role cultural differences play in a victim’s response to trauma and disaster.
- Understand the similarities and difference between a victims response to the various kinds of disaster whether it be a natural or man-made disaster.
- Understand how counselors/responders themselves can be victims of a disaster and how to effectively deal with that challenge.
- Understand how to effectively address issues of burnout among the counselors/responders.
