Perinatal Grief Counselor CE Course Eligibility

Requisite for all Applicants for the Certification applicants/candidates for certification must meet one of the following prerequisites to enter the program:

  • Is a Certified Grief Counselor in the American Academy of Grief Counseling.
  • Holds a certificate or certification in Grief Counseling from another organization AND meet AIHCP’s Grief Counseling Certification prerequisites.

Perinatal Grief Counselor Certification Course List

The perinatal grief counselor certification program is made up of three courses with a total cost of $450. You may enroll into as few or as many course as you wish. All of the CE courses are self paced, independent study. Students buy the textbooks, follow the syllabus and take a comprehensive online exam. Faculty mentoring is provided, as needed. Many of our courses include supplementary videos and course materials. Students have a two-year timeframe to complete all required CE courses in the curriculum. Again, all textbooks and learning materials are separate and not included in the course cost.

 

GC 775 – Perinatal Loss for Grief and Health Care Professionals

This CE course introduces the healthcare and behavioral healthcare professional in understanding the painful world of miscarriage, still-birth and infant death.  Losing a child is difficult at any age but for many, miscarriages are disenfranchised and not recognized.  Others who suffer the extreme pain of stillbirth or losing an infant weeks after, face a very long grieving trajectory of healing.  This course discusses these types of losses and the pain associated with them.  Whether a nurse, physician, funeral director, chaplain, social worker, counselor, birthing coach, or doula, the study of perinatal grief is important to prepare the healthcare and behavioral healthcare professional in helping parents work their way through the grief and healing but to also have a strong understanding of the entire process.  This course hence covers not only grief counseling, but also educates one about the medical processes, terms, and protocols one may experience with miscarriage, stillborn or infant death.

GC 780 – Perinatal Loss for Grief and Health Care Professionals

Perinatal loss is one of the most profound and often misunderstood forms of grief. This CE course offers an in-depth exploration of the emotional, psychological, relational, cultural, and ethical dimensions surrounding miscarriage, stillbirth, and neonatal death. Students will learn how perinatal bereavement uniquely impacts parents, siblings, extended family, and care providers, and why these experiences are often disenfranchised or minimized.

Through a combination of evidence-based research, case examples, reflective practice, and trauma-informed strategies, this course equips learners with the knowledge and skills needed to provide compassionate, developmentally appropriate, and culturally attuned care. Emphasis is placed on effective communication, supporting continuing bonds, recognizing trauma responses, navigating complex medical and ethical decision-making, and understanding how grief intersects with identity, mental health, and family systems.

Students will also explore creative and expressive approaches to healing, including narrative work, legacy-building, ritual, art-based interventions, and meaning-making—ensuring they can support bereaved families with sensitivity, confidence, and competence. By the end of the course, learners will be prepared to engage in supportive, holistic, and inclusive care for individuals and families navigating the heartbreaking journey of perinatal loss.

GC 785 – Perinatal Grief: Concepts and Strategies for Effective Clinical Support

Perinatal loss—including miscarriage, stillbirth, neonatal death, and termination for medical reasons—creates a uniquely complex and often misunderstood grief experience. This course provides counselors, social workers, and other helping professionals with a comprehensive understanding of the emotional, relational, cultural, and developmental dynamics surrounding perinatal grief.

Grounded in current research and trauma-informed, culturally responsive practices, the course explores the multifaceted impact of perinatal loss on individuals, couples, and families. Students will examine theoretical frameworks, attachment- and meaning-making models, risk factors for complicated grief, and the diverse ways grief is expressed. Emphasis is placed on cultivating empathy, presence, and clinical confidence when supporting bereaved parents.

Course Code:  GC 785.  Contact hours of education: 35. Course Cost: $150.00
