Enrolling in the spiritual trauma-informed counseling courses offered by the American Institute of Health Care Professionals (AIHCP) opens the door to powerful, effective healing for those struggling with various traumatic events. As part of our spiritual trauma-informed care counselor certification program, AIHCP’s courses aim to not just provide valuable techniques but also provide a solid foundation to better understand the intersection of spiritual and traditional trauma-informed care.
Requirements for Spiritual Trauma-Informed Care Certification Courses
Anyone can easily sign up for each course below, but those taking them as part of the certification program need to meet one of the criteria listed below:
- A registered nurse currently licensed to practice nursing
- A licensed social worker
- A health care licensed professional
- A professional counselor
- A licensed psychologist
- A licensed physician
- Is in current practice as a licensed minister or any legal clerical representative of a religion.
- A graduate degree in human services, psychology, or human behavior with career experience in these areas
- Is actively certified by AIHCP in: Crisis Intervention Counseling, Grief Counseling, Pastoral Thanatology, Substance Abuse Practitioner,
- Spiritual Counseling, or Spiritual Christian Counseling.
- Other college degrees may be applicable if they are in a related area or if the candidate can verify significant job experiences working under the direct supervision of one who would qualify as a candidate above. Such cases are evaluated by the AIHCP on an individual basis.

Spiritual Trauma-Informed Counseling Course List
The two courses below cost a total of $400. You may enroll into as few or as many course as you wish. All of the CE courses are self paced, independent study. Students buy the textbooks, follow the syllabus and take a comprehensive online exam. Faculty mentoring is provided, as needed. Many of our courses include supplementary videos and course materials. Students have a two-year timeframe to complete all required CE courses in the curriculum. Again, all textbooks and learning materials are separate and not included in the course cost.
SC 660 – Spirituality Based Trauma Informed Care
This CE course explores the intersection of spirituality and trauma-informed care, emphasizing the importance of integrating spiritual perspectives into trauma recovery processes. Students will examine the psychological, emotional, and spiritual impacts of trauma and develop skills to provide compassionate, holistic care that respects individual spiritual beliefs and practices.
Spirituality-Based Trauma-Informed Care offers a comprehensive exploration of trauma from a multidisciplinary perspective, integrating theories and practices rooted in spirituality. Utilizing key texts such as The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel van der Kolk, which provides in-depth case studies and an analysis of how trauma impacts the brain and body, and Understanding Spiritual Abuse by Karen Roudkouski, students will learn to identify signs of trauma and spiritual abuse. The course emphasizes developing empathetic communication skills and implementing trauma-informed strategies that respect and honor spiritual diversity, promoting healing and resilience for those impacted by trauma.
The course prepares health professionals, counselors, sexual assault advocates, clergy, lay ministry leaders and social workers to create safe, healing spaces for clients impacted by trauma and spiritual harm.

SC 661 – Spiritual Trauma Informed Care for Survivors of Sexual and Spiritual Abuse
This CE course offers a comprehensive exploration of spiritual trauma, focusing on the unique experiences of survivors of spiritual and sexual abuse within religious contexts. Students will learn to understand the theological, psychological, and emotional dimensions of trauma, as well as develop practical skills for providing trauma-informed care grounded in compassion and justice. The course integrates Biblical principles with contemporary psychological insights, emphasizing recovery, healing, and the responsible exercise of authority within faith communities.
Spiritual Trauma Informed Care for Survivors of Sexual and Spiritual Abuse provides an in-depth examination of the dynamics of spiritual and sexual abuse and their impact on survivors. Utilizing a biblical framework and mental health best practices, students will explore topics including the nature of spiritual abuse, the misuse of authority, trauma responses, and therapeutic approaches for healing. Through analysis of key texts such as Diane Langberg’s Counseling Survivors of Sexual Abuse, Redeeming Power: Understanding Authority and Abuse in the Church, and Patrick J. Knapp’s Understanding Religious Abuse and Recovery, students will gain critical insights into the processes of recovery, the importance of accountability, and the role of faith community leaders in creating safe environments for healing and restoration.

The certification is valid for four years, after which you must retake AIHCP’s recertification courses to continue using the credentials or title in a professional capacity.
