*DISSERTATION ABSTRACT

This study explored how intercollegiate coaches’ exemplary leadership practices affected their student-athletes’ academic and athletic performances and athlete satisfaction. Kouzes’ and Posner’s (2003) Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI) and Riemer and Chelladurai’s (1998) Athlete Satisfaction Questionnaire (ASQ) were administered to college athletes to assess whether coaches’ leadership practices influenced their athlete satisfaction, and a demographic survey developed by the researcher asked those students for their grade point average (GPA) to measure their academic performance and their rating of their individual athletic performance. The author investigated this discourse to determine the impact of the exemplary leadership theory and practice on college sports in efforts to contribute to the body of research on leadership in terms of higher education and the sports sector.
