Career Overview: Gary W. Duncan began his career in the funeral business and later went into industrial chemistry where he spent five years in polymer research and another five years in behavioral, social science and medical research. He spent the next twenty-one years in private practice as a psychotherapist, counselor, sex therapist, sex educator and a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor in the State of Ohio. He is a writer, published author, an ordained Gnostic Catholic Priest and Spiritual Development Coach. He is the founder of Monastery of Inner Awakening living a contemplative lifestyle in the age of advanced technologies. Also featuring Quantum Spirituality Institute researching the integration of spirituality and science and Center for Death and Afterlife Studies.
Research and Teaching Career: For forty years, Gary has conducted independent research in sexology, consciousness studies, psychic phenomena, and Western and Eastern esoteric, spiritual, and religious traditions. He has taught at the University of Cincinnati, Southern Ohio College, The Union Institute, Guilford Technical Community College, Central Piedmont Community College and Duke University. Gary lectured and taught courses ranging from English, creative writing, English as a second language, mathematics, psychology, sociology, sexology, sacred and esoteric sexuality, Western and Eastern esoteric, mystical, and spiritual traditions, reincarnation, the soul, dying and death, near-death-experience, parapsychology, transpersonal psychology, dream work, various meditational disciplines, Gnostic religion, spirituality and science, and quantum computers.
Education: Gary holds an undergraduate degree in Psychology and a master’s degree in Counseling from the University of Cincinnati. He also holds a master’s degree in Corrections from Xavier University and completed doctoral course work in Social Psychology from the University of Cincinnati and ABD in Counseling from the University of Cincinnati. He has training in analytical chemistry from ICS and USI Chemical and independently studies quantum physics (a forty-year hobby). He has psychoanalytic psychotherapy training from the Cincinnati Psychoanalytic Institute, specialized training in Jungian Analytical Psychology from the University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati Jung Association and the C.G. Jung Institute of Chicago. Sexology and Sex Therapy training from The University of Kentucky College of Medicine, University of Cincinnati Central Psychiatric Clinic and the Masters and Johnson Institute. Consciousness studies from Saybrook Institute and the Monroe Institute. Gary also has specialized training in transpersonal psychology, imagery and clinical hypnosis from the University of Cincinnati and the American Imagery Institute. Independent meditation training from a variety of Christian, Buddhist and Hindu traditions. He has theological training from the Gnostic Catholic Apostolic Church of North America, North American Seminary and Licentiate of Divine Letters in Theology from International Theological Institute of the L’Eglise Gnostique Apostolique. He also holds an honorary doctorate from the College of Neotarian Philosophy in Applied Metaphysical Psychology.
Keynoting, Lectures, Courses, Workshop and Specializations: One of Gary’s strengths is the ability to take complex concepts and make them understandable for the general audience. He has integrated science, especially quantum physics and quantum computers with spirituality creating lectures, keynoting, workshops, and courses. Within this context, Gary created two courses at Duke University, Spirituality and Science: A Reintegration (2007) and Spirituality and Quantum Computers: A New Perspective (2015), setting the foundation for a new contemplative spirituality in the age of advanced technologies. Gary is also a Spiritual Development Coach focusing on spiritual development with an emphasis on esoteric, mystical, religious, and meditational spiritual practices, unusual spiritual emergencies, integrative soul work, and psychopomp work with dying, death, afterlife, and transcendence. He approaches spirituality as well as life from a secular contemplative/monastic perspective in which we are an integral part of ultimate awareness.
Writing and Publications: Gary has written academic papers and articles for various magazines and journals: This Week in Texas, The Cincinnati Gay Yellow Pages, The Greater Cincinnati Resource Directory, Journal of Counseling and Human Service Profession, 50-Plus Magazine, Health & Healing, Health Care Reform and New Dawn Magazine. Gary has published the book Twin Souls Merging, is writing his spiritual journey, Death Transcendence and Beyond: Journey into Inner Awakening.
