COURSE INFORMATION

This course focuses on the major components of the Healthcare Delivery System, past and present. You will review interesting complex systems and public policy issues. The Insurance industries response to managing patients through Population health initiatives and other regulatory concepts are reviewed. The healthcare workforce’s influence of credentialing methods employed to ensure that providers are qualified. Ambulatory and office-based models of providing services are also considered. Multiple healthcare delivery models will be discussed including the rapid growth of outpatient services. Public Health, Long-Term care and Behavioral Health reviews are included in the course content. The importance of Health Information systems impact on operational provider protocols. The role of Emergency Financial and service struggles that challenge the effectiveness of Rural Healthcare providers is reviewed. Management regulations have in light of natural disasters and health emergencies is considered by recent events. The future of healthcare is projected as well. This course will expose any prospective or sitting manager to the many contemporary issues they need to be conversant with to be successful in their jobs. Course Code: HM 510. This course is particularly designed for those who would like to become Certified as a Certified Health Care Manager by the American Institute of Health Care Professionals, Inc., however it is also offered to all health care and management professionals who may be interested in taking it.

GRADING: You must achieve a passing score of at least 70% to complete this course and receive the 35 hours of awarded continuing education credit. There are no letter grades assigned. You will receive notice of your total % score. Those who score below the minimum of 70% will be contacted by the American Institute of Health Care Professionals and options for completing additional course work to achieve a passing score, will be presented.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

It will define key health terms such as health, health system, population health, and health determinants. It will describe the WHO Health System Framework and associated building blocks. Lastly, this chapter will discuss the distinguishing characteristics of the U.S. health system and describe key stakeholders in the U.S. health system.

Chapter 2 discusses the chronological developments of U.S. health care. It will describe key events in the development of health care and discuss the interplay between health care and social trends. It will discuss major legislative and technological breakthroughs and the efforts to reform health care, including the Affordable Care Act.

Chapter 3 will provide a context for better understanding public policy as it pertains to health care, it will review the role of government in shaping healthcare, structure of government and its impact on health.
