COURSE INFORMATION
This CE course, the fourth course in the Forensic Nursing Specialist Certification program focuses on issues related to other applications in clinical practice. Students will study a diverse curriculum of topics which includes disaster management and issues of terrorism. The role of the forensic nurse is highlighted in these situations. A detailed study occurs in emergency management systems including the emergency management cycle, hazard vulnerability analysis and incident command systems. Students study key issues and applications around contemporary issues of disasters, terrorism and the use of weapons of mass destruction, as well as biological weapons. The course content provides an in-depth study of public policy, how it is created and implemented and strategies that are used to influence the development of policy and legislation. Key issues related to policy development for forensic nursing are examined. Students also study key concepts and issues related to the media and how to work more effectively with the media in forensic cases. An examination of the education process and paths that may be taken in the pursuit of education and certifications in forensic nursing are examined. Students will also examine some key issues related to the practice of forensics and forensic nursing, such as search and seizure of evidence. There is also content presented on the use of photography in forensic nursing, the use of digital photography and understanding key concepts related to the admissions of photographs in the courtroom. This course utilizes an authoritative textbook as well as video lectures and presentations. Course Code: FN 560. Contact hours of education = 30.
Pre-requisite: You must be currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in order to register for this continuing education course and you must have successfully completed the first course, FN 500: Forensic Nursing: Theory & Practice I. and FN 520: Forensic Nursing: Theory & Practice II and FN 540: Forensic Nursing: Theory & Practice III.

TIME FRAME: You are allotted two years from the date of enrollment, to complete all of the courses in the Forensic Nursing Practice program. There are no set time-frames, other than the two year allotted time. If you do not complete the courses within the two-year time-frame, you will be removed from the course and an “incomplete” will be recorded for you in our records. Also, if you would like to complete the courses after this two-year expiration time, you would need to register and pay the course tuition fee again.
