COURSE INFORMATION

The tragic nature of a loss involving suicide is more than a simple death but a tragedy of despair and anguish—one society can at times stigmatize and leave family members in a state of grief saturated with ambivalence. The Christian’s answer to this catastrophic event has for the longest time been aligned with the “Death of Judas” leaving the mark of suicide as a state of betrayal.  While it is true Christian moral theology has viewed it as a sin of despair, there are other elements of Christianity that has always sought to understand the despair and find love in the chaos. This is especially true in recent years as Christianity has embraced a more loving pastoral understanding of the misfortunes associated with suicide both for those who have attempted it and those who have been victims of loss family members who have succeeded in it. This course aims at first identifying the Christian theology on suicide, including both suicide and assisted suicide, and then giving the Christian counselor feedback on how to administer to those who contemplate suicide and those who are victims of suicide within the family.

TIME FRAME: You are allotted two years from the date of enrollment, to complete this course. There are no set time-frames, other than the two year allotted time. If you do not complete the course within the two-year time-frame, you will be removed from the course and an “incomplete” will be recorded for you in our records. Also, if you would like to complete the course after this two-year expiration time, you would need to register and pay the course tuition fee again.

GRADING: You must achieve a passing score of at least 70% to complete this course and receive the 40 hours of awarded continuing education credit. There are no letter grades assigned. You will receive notice of your total % score. Those who score below the minimum of 70% will be contacted by AIHCP and will be permitted one more attempt to retake the online examination.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

• To understand the theological teachings of Christianity on suicide
• To provide one with general information on suicide as a historical and personal phenomenon throughout history.
• To understand the historical nature of suicide as a sin of despair but simultaneously realize the multiple psychological factors that can remove some culpability for such actions
• To emphasize the love of God in suicide related incidents when counseling
• To comprehend the principle teachings of Christianity regarding Euthanasia
• To contrast the difference between dying with dignity and assisted suicide.
• To provide one with a frame of mind for understanding suicide, suicidal thinking and suicide attempts
• To give one the necessary set of strategies for congregational care in regards to suicidal behavior
• To help one with the necessary information when responding  to a completed suicide
