AM 500 – Anger Management: Concepts & Theories

Yield Theory, developed by Dr. Christian Conte, a Level V Anger Management Specialist, is the basis for Walking through Anger. It is an evidenced-based approach used by the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections and by other states and organizations. Although the theory can be briefly known by its three actions and seven fundamental components, its practice requires counselors, psychotherapists and anger management practitioners to be mindful of their own nature, strengths, and weaknesses. Once mastered, however, Yield Theory can be an effective tool that enhances communication, abbreviates and even eliminates anger, and provides avenues for positive behavioral outcomes. CI 600 – Counseling PTSD & Suicidal Clients

This course provides greater understanding in the assessment, etiology and treatment of clients who experience PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and who may be suicidal. This is a guided, independent study CE Course with faculty mentoring as needed. . You are to study and progress at your own rate. This course is comprehensive and provides study on how to therapeutically treat suffers of PTSD using cognitive behavioral approaches to treatment plans. Students will learn criteria for diagnosis, assessment and the cognitive behavioral model for treatment. CI 610 – Counseling Victims of Violence & Disasters

This course provides an introduction to the theories and practice of crisis intervention with special concentration in traumatic events/circumstances experienced by clients. The first part of the course focuses on the counseling of victims of violence. Many types of violence, such as domestic and child abuse are presented. Students will learn guidelines for referrals for clients. For each of the types of violence presented, students will learn to address three stages of counseling including crisis intervention, and short-term and long-term interventions. Secondary victimizations are also examined. The second part of the course focuses on training modules for crisis intervention and disaster responders. CI 625 – Understanding Compassion Fatigue and Vicarious Trauma in Helping Professionals

This CE course explores the emotional and psychological challenges faced by helping professionals, with a focus on compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma. Participants will gain a deep understanding of the signs, symptoms, and impact of these phenomena, as well as evidence-based strategies for prevention and self-care. Through engaging textbooks, and a document, students will learn to recognize their own stress responses and develop resilience to sustain their important work caring for others. Course Code= CI 625. GC 684 – Effective Clinical Interviewing

This CE course provides a very comprehensive overview of theories, processes and considerations when conducting a clinical interview.  Four broad areas of clinical interviewing are covered: 1. “Becoming a Mental Health Professional”, 2. “Listening and Relationship Development”, 3. “Structuring and Assessment” and, 4. Interviewing Special Populations.”   Chapters within each area discuss research, theories, cultural issues, ethics, techniques and challenges.  Ultimately the course provides clear and practical knowledge of the clinical interview. HE 500 – Health Care Educator

This course is designed to examine the professional role of health practitioner as educator.  Health practitioners facilitate learning for clients and their families as they work to overcome the challenges that health, disease, prevention, and rehabilitation bring. They also share their experience, disseminate new knowledge and guide colleagues and students alike as they acquire new skills. This course is designed to examine these ‘educator’ roles in the health context and stimulate a critical analysis of taken-for-granted assumptions about this integral aspect of practice. MED 415 – Relation and Health

This comprehensive CE course examines Benson’s Relaxation Response and goes well beyond to highlight his work years after its introduction. Students will not only re-examine the relaxation response but will also study other relaxation modalities used from a mind-body health care perspective. Students will study physiology as well as genetics as related to body- mind modalities. Study will continue with the examine of many illnesses and how body-mind modalities are being incorporated into care. Also examined are impressive outcomes related to relaxation modalities and other body-mind modalities. SC 660 – Spirituality Based Trauma Informed Care

This CE course explores the intersection of spirituality and trauma-informed care, emphasizing the importance of integrating spiritual perspectives into trauma recovery processes. Students will examine the psychological, emotional, and spiritual impacts of trauma and develop skills to provide compassionate, holistic care that respects individual spiritual beliefs and practices.

Spirituality Based Trauma Informed Care offers a comprehensive exploration of trauma from a multidisciplinary perspective, integrating theories and practices rooted in spirituality. Utilizing key texts such as The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel van der Kolk, which provides in-depth case studies and an analysis of how trauma impacts the brain and body, and Understanding Spiritual Abuse by Karen Roudkouski, students will learn to identify signs of trauma and spiritual abuse. The course emphasizes developing empathetic communication skills and implementing trauma-informed strategies that respect and honor spiritual diversity, promoting healing and resilience for those impacted by trauma.

SC 661 – Spiritual Trauma Informed Care for Survivors of Sexual and Spiritual Abuse

Students will learn to understand the theological, psychological, and emotional dimensions of trauma, as well as develop practical skills for providing trauma-informed care grounded in compassion and justice. Spiritual Trauma Informed Care for Survivors of Sexual and Spiritual Abuse provide an in-depth examination of the dynamics of spiritual and sexual abuse and their impact on survivors. Utilizing a biblical framework and mental health best practices, students will explore topics including the nature of spiritual abuse, the misuse of authority, trauma responses, and therapeutic approaches for healing. Through analysis of key texts such as Diane Langberg’s Counseling Survivors of Sexual Abuse, Redeeming Power: Understanding Authority and Abuse in the Church, and Patrick J. BH 100 – Basic Counseling Skills for The Health Care Professional

This CE course is specially designed for the healthcare or behavioral healthcare professional who is non-clinical and non-licensed. Many pastoral and non-clinical professionals work in the behavioral health field but they may lack formal education in basic counseling science. This course provides the basic knowledge to help non-clinical counselors enhance their knowledge and expertise in employing basic attending, listening and communicating skills in counseling. It also gives new counselors a sense of comfort knowing what to expect in counseling and how to better cultivate healthy therapeutic counseling relationships.

This course will address counselor ethics, attending skills, responding skills, and communication with clients. In addition, it will help counselors help understand the nature of counseling and how to productively help individuals discover true change in their lives through a variety of counseling skills and techniques. Finally, it will emphasize the importance of empathy and cross- cultural understanding in helping each client.

This course is required for those who are not clinical counselors, social workers, marriage family therapists, or healthcare providers who are not licensed, or have at least not taken a college level basic counseling course. It can also be taken as recertification course for anyone looking to review counseling skills and techniques
