GC 785 – Perinatal Grief: Concepts and Strategies for Effective Clinical Support

COURSE INFORMATION

Perinatal loss—including miscarriage, stillbirth, neonatal death, and termination for medical reasons—creates a uniquely complex and often misunderstood grief experience. This course provides counselors, social workers, and other helping professionals with a comprehensive understanding of the emotional, relational, cultural, and developmental dynamics surrounding perinatal grief.

Grounded in current research and trauma-informed, culturally responsive practices, the course explores the multifaceted impact of perinatal loss on individuals, couples, and families. Students will examine theoretical frameworks, attachment- and meaning-making models, risk factors for complicated grief, and the diverse ways grief is expressed. Emphasis is placed on cultivating empathy, presence, and clinical confidence when supporting bereaved parents.

TIME FRAME: You are allotted two years from the date of enrollment, to complete this course. There are no set time-frames, other than the two year allotted time. If you do not complete the course within the two-year time-frame, you will be removed from the course and an “incomplete” will be recorded for you in our records. Also, if you would like to complete the course after this two-year expiration time, you would need to register and pay the course tuition fee again.

GRADINGYou must achieve a passing score of at least 70% to complete this course and receive the 35  hours of awarded continuing education credit. There are no letter grades assigned. You will receive notice of your total % score. Those who score below the minimum of 70% will be contacted by AIHCP and will be permitted one more attempt to retake the online examination.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Differentiate among types of perinatal loss (miscarriage, stillbirth, neonatal death, and termination for medical reasons) and describe their unique psychological, relational, and cultural impacts.
  2. Analyze major theoretical frameworks relevant to perinatal grief, including attachment theory, continuing bonds, meaning-making models, and contemporary grief theories.
  3. Identify risk factors and protective factors associated with complicated or prolonged grief following perinatal loss.
  4. Demonstrate trauma-informed and culturally responsive skills when assessing and supporting individuals, couples, and families experiencing perinatal grief.
